The broad-based committee\, chaired by event founder Lewes Mayor Ted Becker\, includes Lewes in Bloom co-chairs and founder\, a representative from City of Lewes Parks and Recreation Commission and the Zwaanendael Museum. This year Lewes in Bloom funded the purchase of 26\,931 tulip and 3\,950 spring bulbs that were planted in fall 2021 by members of Lewes in Bloom.\nThe timing of the tulips’ appearance is an inexact science and either milder or colder weather in advance of the event dates can increase the probability that the dates of the celebration may not exactly coincide with the tulips blooming! The event dates (April 1-17) span three weekends. \nThe locations of the plantings will be identified on the map produced in association with the celebration. More than 100 varieties will be on display. \nTiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district. The map lists more than 20 locations where the bulbs were planted. It also has a schedule of activities associated with the Tulip Celebration. \nTulip Sale: On April 15 & 16 Lewes in Bloom will be selling tulips at the Bank Street Plaza on Second Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. \nHistory in Bloom Walking Tours: The Lewes Historical Society and Lewes in Bloom are partnering to offer walking tours on Saturday\, April 2nd and Saturday\, April 9th at 10:30 a.m.\, 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  The tours will be led by a historic guide and will provide information on Lewes’ rich maritime history.  A knowledgeable guide from Lewes in Bloom will be on the tour to point out the multiple tulip varieties found around Lewes.  The tours begin at the Cannonball House’s back garden\, behind 118 Front Street. The tour cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Purchase tickets at www.historiclewes.org/visit/tours/html. \nFloral demonstrations and tulip sales: Ken Norman\, owner/designer at Floral Inspirations\, located on the beach side of the canal at 524 E. Savannah Road\, in the shops under the Beacon Motel\, will be hosting demonstrations on Friday and Saturday\, April 8th &  9th and 15th & 16th from 1 – 3 p.m.  Owner/designer Mayumi Williamson of Flowers by Mayumi\, located in the historic business district at 128 Second Street\, will be hosting a drop-in floral arranging demonstration on April 8 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.\nSpring Geranium Sale: Benefits the GFWC Zwaanendael Women’s Club’s Community Service Programs. They are taking orders until April 15 with pick up on Saturday\, April 30 at Lewes in Bloom’s Warehouse at 217 Schley Avenue\, Lewes. $7 per 6” pot – pink\, white\, red and salmon. DESCRIPTION:Sussex Bird Club | Plant It and They Will Come\, with Ashley Kennedy\nSunday\, February 13 | 2:00 PM Eastern Time | Online and In-Person\nYour yard might look beautiful\, but how do you know if it’s contributing to the local ecosystem? Numerous studies from around the world suggest that insect populations are currently in decline. This in turn\, affects birds who rely on insects for food. To determine which insects are most important in bird diets\, Ashley Kennedy\, a board-certified entomologist\, conducted a citizen science project \n \nAshley Kennedy is a Board-Certified Entomologist\, a Science Policy Fellow of the Entomological Society of America\, and an environmental scientist for the state of Delaware. She completed internships/seasonal positions at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center\, the National Zoo\, and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and studied animal behavior during her undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University. Her doctoral dissertation research in Doug Tallamy’s lab at the University of Delaware focused on bird-insect food webs\, specifically\, investigating which insects are the most important in birds’ diets. \nShe crowd-sourced images of birds with their arthropod prey. More than 7\,000 photos were contributed by participants across North America\, demonstrating that caterpillars are the preferred prey for most terrestrial breeding birds. If you want to turn your yard into a better wildlife habitat\, come learn about the food webs that connect plants\, insects\, and birds so you too\, can make a difference! \n \n  \n  \nOur general meetings are open to everyone and are held 8 months a year: \nJanuary\, February\, March\, April\, May\, September\, October\, and November. \nThe meetings are held at the Lewes Public Library\, 111 Adams Ave.\, Lewes\, Delaware\, on the second Sunday of the month at 2 pm. \nEach month we have a guest speaker with an interesting presentation about birds. Come early to socialize before the official program! \n  \nThe Sussex Bird Club was formed in 1982 by its first president Bill Fintel\, and has grown to over 100 members. Meetings are held at the Lewes Public Library seven times a year\, generally on the second Sunday of the month. (There are no meetings in June\, July\, August\, or December.) Business transactions are kept short\, and there is always an interesting program related to wild birds. The Sussex Bird Club’s primary objective is to promote the knowledge and enjoyment of wild birds through guided field trips and monthly meetings about various aspects of birding. Our meetings\, field trips\, and events are open to all. We have an exciting schedule of field trips to the many outstanding birding areas within Sussex County\, as well as trips to birding hotspots beyond Delaware’s borders. Beginning birders are always welcome\, and birders of all levels will enjoy the camaraderie and the variety of birding experiences.  Our members are interested in bird conservation\, and many volunteer in other capacities\, such as monitoring piping plover nests or supporting the Hawk Watch at Cape Henlopen State Park. Greenwich Village Voice theater critic\, Michael Musto praised his performance and invited him as a special guest at his birthday party that year. \nIn 2010 and 2012 he won “Best Comedian” at the Las Vegas Reel Awards which is akin to the Oscars for the Tribute Artist Industry. \nHe has participated in the Sunburst Conference of Professional Celebrity Impersonators since 2008 where he won “Funniest Male”\, “Best Transformation”\, and “Best Male Costume” three times each and has been inducted into their Hall of Fame for each in 2011\, 2013\, and 2014 respectively. He was one of three finalists for the “Agent’s Best” (meaning the best act out of dozens that agents reviewed) award in 2010 and 2012.
