The broad-based committee\, chaired by event founder Lewes Mayor Ted Becker\, includes Lewes in Bloom co-chairs and founder\, a representative from City of Lewes Parks and Recreation Commission and the Zwaanendael Museum. This year Lewes in Bloom funded the purchase of 26\,931 tulip and 3\,950 spring bulbs that were planted in fall 2021 by members of Lewes in Bloom.\nThe timing of the tulips’ appearance is an inexact science and either milder or colder weather in advance of the event dates can increase the probability that the dates of the celebration may not exactly coincide with the tulips blooming! The event dates (April 1-17) span three weekends. \nThe locations of the plantings will be identified on the map produced in association with the celebration. More than 100 varieties will be on display. \nTiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district. The map lists more than 20 locations where the bulbs were planted. It also has a schedule of activities associated with the Tulip Celebration. \nTulip Sale: On April 15 & 16 Lewes in Bloom will be selling tulips at the Bank Street Plaza on Second Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. \nHistory in Bloom Walking Tours: The Lewes Historical Society and Lewes in Bloom are partnering to offer walking tours on Saturday\, April 2nd and Saturday\, April 9th at 10:30 a.m.\, 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  The tours will be led by a historic guide and will provide information on Lewes’ rich maritime history.  A knowledgeable guide from Lewes in Bloom will be on the tour to point out the multiple tulip varieties found around Lewes.  The tours begin at the Cannonball House’s back garden\, behind 118 Front Street. The tour cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Purchase tickets at www.historiclewes.org/visit/tours/html. \nFloral demonstrations and tulip sales: Ken Norman\, owner/designer at Floral Inspirations\, located on the beach side of the canal at 524 E. Savannah Road\, in the shops under the Beacon Motel\, will be hosting demonstrations on Friday and Saturday\, April 8th &  9th and 15th & 16th from 1 – 3 p.m.  Owner/designer Mayumi Williamson of Flowers by Mayumi\, located in the historic business district at 128 Second Street\, will be hosting a drop-in floral arranging demonstration on April 8 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.\nSpring Geranium Sale: Benefits the GFWC Zwaanendael Women’s Club’s Community Service Programs. They are taking orders until April 15 with pick up on Saturday\, April 30 at Lewes in Bloom’s Warehouse at 217 Schley Avenue\, Lewes. $7 per 6” pot – pink\, white\, red and salmon. SEE WORKS\n\n\n\n“We are thrilled to welcome back acclaimed artist\, Dane Tilghman\, for another solo exhibition. Dane is a premier painter of African American culture\, whose work is in numerous universities and major sports arenas\, in addition to being collected by celebrities like Nelson Mandela. \nFor the third year in a row\, Dane brings his larger-than-life artwork to our walls\, giving the people of Lewes the opportunity to bask in the grandeur of his impressionist-style paintings. \nThe ethos of Dane’s work is to bring awareness and attention to the lost history of African American communities throughout the US. Dane embraces an extravagant style and color palette to make Black life and culture from the early 20th Century the centerpiece of artistic admiration. He isn’t confined by artistic rules or forms\, opting to combine qualities of cubism\, impressionism\, and realism with palette knife work and various mediums to create textural pieces that come to life on the canvases. \nHis powerful\, yet poignant\, works remind viewers of the importance of a caring society for people of all color and creed\, not only in history but in the present and the future. \nDane Tilghman grew up in West Chester\, PA and has been a professional artist for nearly 40 years. His family was originally from Tilghman Island in the Chesapeake Bay before migrating to Dover and finally settling in Pennsylvania. \nHe is inspired by historic black and white images\, transforming a once static and unidimensional photograph into a vibrant and profound painting. For this show\, Dane and Tony Boyd-Heron\, Peninsula Gallery’s exhibition curator and co-owner\, visited the Delaware Archives to find photographs depicting Black life from the early 1900s. Tony said of the experience\, “we were disappointed by the little material showing the candid life and spirit of the African American communities in the archive.” \nDane says\, “Black people played just as much a role in the life-blood of Delaware as anywhere else. The working-class individuals depicted in my work\, whether they be working on the sea or on a farm\, were family-oriented; they had a purpose and were here to make a mark — even if that was just to make sure there was food on their table. But I believe everybody has a purpose. These individuals probably didn’t think they would be immortalized on canvas\, but they lived and served history just like anyone else.” \nA reception will be held on Saturday\, February 12\, from 5 to 6:30 pm\, and attendees will have the opportunity to mingle with Dane during the evening.
