SUMMARY:CHSP Borrow a Bike\, Enjoy Cycling the Park to Warm Up on Winter Days!
DESCRIPTION:Winter Opening Hours  start November 1st\,  for the Bike Barn and\nNature Center:  Wednesday  thru Sunday ( closed  on Mondays & Tuesdays) 10am – 3pm  for the Barn\, 10am – 4pm Nature Center   Bikes can be borrowed for up to 2 hours weather permitting\, with last bikes out at 2 pm.  All bikes must be returned to the Bike Barn by 2:45 pm.\n We will be enforcing new procedures to ensure safety for our Bike Barn volunteers and visitors. This will include restricting access to the Bike Barn buildings – visitors will pick up and return bikes and helmets outside the Bike Barn.\n\n\nWe provide free loaner bikes…\nOne of the most popular activities provided by FOCHSP is” Borrow-a-Bike”. Here people can borrow a bike to ride within the park and see the sights for up to 2 hours…at no charge! That said\, we do gladly accept all donations to help us offset the cost of new bikes\, helmets and maintenance.  There is a  secure donation box  on the left front of the Barn.\nSince its start in 1997\, Borrow-a-Bike has always been operated entirely by volunteers and funded by donations. In 2014\, bikes were borrowed by around  13\,000 people and  that number  continues to  grow\, reaching more than 14\,000 in 2019\n \nBorrowers must complete the form provided inside the Nature Center and leave a photo-ID there for up to 5 riders\, prior to picking up bikes. \n Groups larger than 10 must  email or  call us ahead of time to schedule your  requirements  –  FOCHSP@gmail.com   302-858-6127 \n\nAll riders under 18 must wear helmets.\nOrange cones will be placed at 6-foot intervals; groups must stay at the next available cone until it is their turn to pick up bikes.\nBikes will be available for pickup at the bike racks located between the Nature Center and Bike Barn.\nBikes and helmets are to be returned on the opposite side of the Bike Barn.\nBikes must stay on trails and in the Park at all times\nBikes must be returned within 2 hours\, but no later than 2:45 p.m.\nPlease check back here regularly as days and hours of operation may be subject to change\n\n\nFind more great park info: https://destateparks.com/Beaches/CapeHenlopen\nThe Story of Borrow-A- Bike \nThe Borrow-A-Bike program began with a plan in 1997 and has always been operated by volunteers. In 1999\, a $3\,000 grant from The Delaware Bicycle Council enabled the purchase of 15 bikes that were housed in a shed built by the Lion’s Club. Additional donations — including $1\,000 from Dupont — increased the program to 35 bicycles operated from a new shed supplied by the Friends. The current “Bike Barn”  which stands next to the Nature Center was built from scratch in 2009 by Friends volunteers under the leadership of Stan Lemiska\, Chuck Moore\, and Carl Lofgren. Today\, the program includes  more than 40 adult  bicycles\, including 2 with baby carriers\, 12 children’s bicycles\, and  2 double baby trailers.  Due to the  popularity of the program a second  Bike Barn has recently  been built  behind the existing one. The goal of this service is to alleviate parking and traffic congestion on city streets\, help with the parking challenges throughout the city and provide increased circulation to services and businesses. \n\nThe Lewes Line transit service begins Monday\, May 23rd\, and will operate seven days a week through September 30th. Each bus can accommodate 12 walk-on passengers and 2 handicapped passengers.\n\nHours: 9am – 9pm\nCost: $1 cash (credit cards are not accepted and change is not available) \nTiming: Each stop will be served once every half hour\nFrequent Rider:  Cards are available and can be purchased from the bus driver. The fee for each card is $10 for 12 rides. Cards can be used the entire season.  No refunds will be given for unused rides and these cards have no cash value.\n\n\nBus will pick up passengers at these designated locations:\n  – Cape May Lewes Ferry Terminal\n  – Johnnie Walker Beach\n  – Savannah Beach\n\n– Second & Market Streets  – Otis Smith Lot\n  – George H.P. Lewes City Hall is open Monday – Friday from 8am – 4pm\, except holidays.  If you call outside of these hours please leave a message and someone will contact you the next business day.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTHE CITY WELCOMES ALL PASSENGERS\n \nTo ensure the ride is enjoyable for everyone\,\n\nplease follow these important bus rules.\n \n1. Be respectful & courteous of passengers – No smoking\, vaping\, eating\, drinking\, inappropriate language or unruly behavior is permitted on the bus.\n2.  All children must be accompanied by an adult.\n3. The City reserves the right to refuse service to any person who is intoxicated\, under the influence\, disruptive or unruly.\n4. Passengers must dress appropriately by wearing shirts and shoes.\n5. Passengers may bring items on the bus – Please remember to only bring items you can carry on and keep out of the walking aisle.\n6. Buses have wheelchair accessibility – Each bus can accommodate up to two wheelchairs.\n7. Service animals are permitted on the bus – Please leave pets home.\n8. Buses will operate daily unless there is a significant event – Please stay tuned to this webpage for operational changes.\n9. Items left on the bus will be turned over to the Lewes Police Department – The department can be reached by calling 302-645-6406 or by visiting 111 Franklin Avenue.\n\n\nWE HOPE YOU ENJOY THE RIDE!!!
