SUMMARY:Great Delaware Kite Festival
DESCRIPTION:Registration is on-site and begins at 10 am\nEgg Hunt at 11 am\nCompetition begins at 11:30 am \nThe Great Delaware Kite Festival\, co-sponsored by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and the Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation\, annually takes place at Cape Henlopen State Park on Good Friday. This year\, the festival is celebrating its 51st Anniversary.  The Easter Bunny’s appearance is a longtime feature of the event that will continue again this year. An Easter Egg Hunt was added to the festivities five years ago and it will continue to kick off the event at 11 a.m. This year the hunt is sponsored by County Bank and includes 5\,000 eggs filled with candy and toys. The kite competitions for children and teens are scheduled to begin at 11:30. The highest kite competition follows at approximately 1 p.m. and is open to all ages.  The awards ceremony for those competitions includes medallion awards sponsored by Lewes Chamber members. The popular two-member team Egg Toss competition continues again this year immediately after the highest kite contest. The adult competitions will begin at approximately 2 p.m.\, interspersed with professional stunt kite flying demonstrations. The event concludes with the awards ceremony for the adult competitions. Note that the times may vary according to weather conditions and the number of competitors. \nKite competition registrations begin at 10 a.m. with ample opportunity for kite competitors to practice in the fields adjacent to the competition area. All of the activities are free including the Easter Egg Hunt and the Egg Toss. The Easter Egg Hunt will be limited to children up to the age of 12 and the Egg Toss teams can be multigenerational. Pre-registration for the Easter Egg Hunt is not necessary but participants are encouraged to arrive at the park much earlier than 11 a.m. when it is scheduled to start. Parking for the event is at the park’s Beach Parking lot and time is required to be transported back to the event location within the park. \nThe kite competitions are in three age categories: Children-Up to age 12; Teens-13-17 and Adults-18 & older. Within each age category\, kite flyers are judged by the type of kite they are flying — home-made or store-bought. The Special Class awards include the Open Individual Ballet (free flight performance accompanied by music which the entrant provides)\, Individual Precision (compulsory figures including “The Square\,” “The Mount\,” and “Ladder Down” judged on technical execution)\, Most Senior Flyer\, Youngest Flyer\, Flyer Furthest From Home\, Smallest Kite and Largest Kite.  The Highest Kite Award category is open to all ages.  Entrance fees apply for cars to enter Cape Henlopen State Park which will be collected at the entrance to the park – $5 per car for Delaware license tags and $10 per car for out-of-state tags.  The Jolly Trolley will transport spectators at no cost to the competition field from the state park’s beach parking lot and handicap parking is available at the Seaside Nature Center parking lot. \nFor those who have not made their own kites and want to participate\, Kids’ Ketch and Rehoboth Toy & Kite Company will be on-site selling a wide variety of kites with space\, adjacent to the competition field\, to practice in advance of the competitions which begin at 11:30 a.m. Additionally\, there are food vendors\, a face painter and community organizations set up surrounding the field. \nCall 645-8073 or visit www.leweschamber.com for more information. \nCONTENT from www.leweschamber.com

The broad-based committee\, chaired by event founder Lewes Mayor Ted Becker\, includes Lewes in Bloom co-chairs and founder\, a representative from City of Lewes Parks and Recreation Commission and the Zwaanendael Museum. This year Lewes in Bloom funded the purchase of 26\,931 tulip and 3\,950 spring bulbs that were planted in fall 2021 by members of Lewes in Bloom.\nThe timing of the tulips’ appearance is an inexact science and either milder or colder weather in advance of the event dates can increase the probability that the dates of the celebration may not exactly coincide with the tulips blooming! The event dates (April 1-17) span three weekends. \nThe locations of the plantings will be identified on the map produced in association with the celebration. More than 100 varieties will be on display. \nTiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district. The map lists more than 20 locations where the bulbs were planted. It also has a schedule of activities associated with the Tulip Celebration. \nTulip Sale: On April 15 & 16 Lewes in Bloom will be selling tulips at the Bank Street Plaza on Second Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. \nHistory in Bloom Walking Tours: The Lewes Historical Society and Lewes in Bloom are partnering to offer walking tours on Saturday\, April 2nd and Saturday\, April 9th at 10:30 a.m.\, 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  The tours will be led by a historic guide and will provide information on Lewes’ rich maritime history.  A knowledgeable guide from Lewes in Bloom will be on the tour to point out the multiple tulip varieties found around Lewes.  The tours begin at the Cannonball House’s back garden\, behind 118 Front Street. This year’s series is entitled “The War of 1812: Over Two Centuries Later.” \nThe series is designed to provide stimulating programming for audiences who have just left work for the day. Programs will take place between 5 and 6:15 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public with complimentary coffee and cookies available for those in attendance. In this lecture\, historic-site interpreter Tom Pulmano discusses the role played by African Americans in both the American and British war efforts. \n\nThursday\, April 14\, 2022 \n“Reminiscences of the Life and Times of Dr. James Tilton.” Lecture by historic-site interpreter Steven Mumford exploring the life and long medical career of Delawarean Dr. James Tilton who served as United States surgeon general during the War of 1812. \n\nThursday\, April 21\, 2022 \n“The Federalist Views of James A. Bayard.” Living-history theatrical performance in which lead historic-site interpreter Gavin Malone portrays Delaware’s James A. Bayard\, a prominent member of the Federalist Party and one of the leading voices opposing the war\, as he prepares to leave for treaty negotiations with Great Britain. \n\nThursday\, April 28\, 2022 \n“Stories of the Dauntless Women of the War of 1812.” Lecture by historic-site interpreter Susan Emory exploring the brave women from America\, England and Canada who played important roles in the war effort. \n\nCompleted in 1791\, The Old State House is one of the earliest state-house buildings in the United States\, serving as the home of Delaware’s legislature until 1933 when the General Assembly moved to larger quarters in Legislative Hall. The venerable structure now appears as it would have in the late 1700s during the United States’ critical early years as a nation. It features a courtroom\, governor’s and county offices and chambers for the state’s Senate and House of Representatives. The building is situated on Dover’s historic Green\, a public area designated by William Penn in 1683. The Green is a partner site of the First State National Historical Park. \n\n \nThe Old State House \n\nThe Old State House is administered by the Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs\, an agency of the State of Delaware. The division enhances Delaware’s quality of life by preserving the state’s unique historical heritage\, fostering community stability and economic vitality and providing educational programs and assistance to the general public on Delaware history. The division’s diverse array of services includes operation of five museums which are accredited by the American Alliance of Museums\, administration of the State Historic Preservation Office\, conservation of the state’s archaeological and historic-objects collections\, operation of a conference center and management of historic properties across the state. We will begin with a social time at 5\, beginning at 6 from September through May..  If you want to take advantage of Happy Hour drink prices\, you will have to purchase them at the bar.  Servers will be available for those who want to order other drinks in our meeting room.  We will have a short business meeting during this hour followed by dinner (you purchase your own) and then a fellow traveler’s presentation. \nThe Delmarva Bucket List Travel Club is a group who meet monthly for presentations about different parts of the world given by its members.  It was founded in 2016 by Sue Fox\, a retired college professor\, who developed and led college study trips to different parts of Italy\, including Sicily; Ireland; Andalusia\, Spain; and Paris and Bruges\, together with trips to the California Bay Country (San Francisco and Monterey) and Santa Fe\, New Mexico. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt is open to all who love to learn about the world\, including those who have traveled\, those who can no longer travel\, and those who wish to travel. SUMMARY:CHSP Borrow a Bike\, Enjoy Cycling the Park to Warm Up on Winter Days!
DESCRIPTION:Winter Opening Hours  start November 1st\,  for the Bike Barn and\nNature Center:  Wednesday  thru Sunday ( closed  on Mondays & Tuesdays) 10am – 3pm  for the Barn\, 10am – 4pm Nature Center   Bikes can be borrowed for up to 2 hours weather permitting\, with last bikes out at 2 pm.  All bikes must be returned to the Bike Barn by 2:45 pm.\n We will be enforcing new procedures to ensure safety for our Bike Barn volunteers and visitors. This will include restricting access to the Bike Barn buildings – visitors will pick up and return bikes and helmets outside the Bike Barn.\n\n\nWe provide free loaner bikes…\nOne of the most popular activities provided by FOCHSP is” Borrow-a-Bike”. Here people can borrow a bike to ride within the park and see the sights for up to 2 hours…at no charge! That said\, we do gladly accept all donations to help us offset the cost of new bikes\, helmets and maintenance.  There is a  secure donation box  on the left front of the Barn.\nSince its start in 1997\, Borrow-a-Bike has always been operated entirely by volunteers and funded by donations. In 2014\, bikes were borrowed by around  13\,000 people and  that number  continues to  grow\, reaching more than 14\,000 in 2019\n \nBorrowers must complete the form provided inside the Nature Center and leave a photo-ID there for up to 5 riders\, prior to picking up bikes. \n Groups larger than 10 must  email or  call us ahead of time to schedule your  requirements  –  FOCHSP@gmail.com   302-858-6127 \n\nAll riders under 18 must wear helmets.\nOrange cones will be placed at 6-foot intervals; groups must stay at the next available cone until it is their turn to pick up bikes.\nBikes will be available for pickup at the bike racks located between the Nature Center and Bike Barn.\nBikes and helmets are to be returned on the opposite side of the Bike Barn.\nBikes must stay on trails and in the Park at all times\nBikes must be returned within 2 hours\, but no later than 2:45 p.m.\nPlease check back here regularly as days and hours of operation may be subject to change\n\n\nFind more great park info: https://destateparks.com/Beaches/CapeHenlopen\nThe Story of Borrow-A- Bike \nThe Borrow-A-Bike program began with a plan in 1997 and has always been operated by volunteers. In 1999\, a $3\,000 grant from The Delaware Bicycle Council enabled the purchase of 15 bikes that were housed in a shed built by the Lion’s Club. Additional donations — including $1\,000 from Dupont — increased the program to 35 bicycles operated from a new shed supplied by the Friends. The current “Bike Barn”  which stands next to the Nature Center was built from scratch in 2009 by Friends volunteers under the leadership of Stan Lemiska\, Chuck Moore\, and Carl Lofgren. Today\, the program includes  more than 40 adult  bicycles\, including 2 with baby carriers\, 12 children’s bicycles\, and  2 double baby trailers.  Due to the  popularity of the program a second  Bike Barn has recently  been built  behind the existing one. The broad-based committee\, chaired by event founder Lewes Mayor Ted Becker\, includes Lewes in Bloom co-chairs and founder\, a representative from City of Lewes Parks and Recreation Commission and the Zwaanendael Museum. This year Lewes in Bloom funded the purchase of 26\,931 tulip and 3\,950 spring bulbs that were planted in fall 2021 by members of Lewes in Bloom.\nThe timing of the tulips’ appearance is an inexact science and either milder or colder weather in advance of the event dates can increase the probability that the dates of the celebration may not exactly coincide with the tulips blooming! The event dates (April 1-17) span three weekends. \nThe locations of the plantings will be identified on the map produced in association with the celebration. More than 100 varieties will be on display. \nTiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district. The map lists more than 20 locations where the bulbs were planted. It also has a schedule of activities associated with the Tulip Celebration. \nTulip Sale: On April 15 & 16 Lewes in Bloom will be selling tulips at the Bank Street Plaza on Second Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. \nHistory in Bloom Walking Tours: The Lewes Historical Society and Lewes in Bloom are partnering to offer walking tours on Saturday\, April 2nd and Saturday\, April 9th at 10:30 a.m.\, 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  The tours will be led by a historic guide and will provide information on Lewes’ rich maritime history.  A knowledgeable guide from Lewes in Bloom will be on the tour to point out the multiple tulip varieties found around Lewes.  The tours begin at the Cannonball House’s back garden\, behind 118 Front Street. The tour cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.
