The broad-based committee\, chaired by event founder Lewes Mayor Ted Becker\, includes Lewes in Bloom co-chairs and founder\, a representative from City of Lewes Parks and Recreation Commission and the Zwaanendael Museum. This year Lewes in Bloom funded the purchase of 26\,931 tulip and 3\,950 spring bulbs that were planted in fall 2021 by members of Lewes in Bloom.\nThe timing of the tulips’ appearance is an inexact science and either milder or colder weather in advance of the event dates can increase the probability that the dates of the celebration may not exactly coincide with the tulips blooming! The event dates (April 1-17) span three weekends. \nThe locations of the plantings will be identified on the map produced in association with the celebration. More than 100 varieties will be on display. \nTiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district. The map lists more than 20 locations where the bulbs were planted. It also has a schedule of activities associated with the Tulip Celebration. \nTulip Sale: On April 15 & 16 Lewes in Bloom will be selling tulips at the Bank Street Plaza on Second Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. \nHistory in Bloom Walking Tours: The Lewes Historical Society and Lewes in Bloom are partnering to offer walking tours on Saturday\, April 2nd and Saturday\, April 9th at 10:30 a.m.\, 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  The tours will be led by a historic guide and will provide information on Lewes’ rich maritime history.  A knowledgeable guide from Lewes in Bloom will be on the tour to point out the multiple tulip varieties found around Lewes.  The tours begin at the Cannonball House’s back garden\, behind 118 Front Street. The tour cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. DESCRIPTION:Volunteering for Freeman Arts Pavilion\, whether at our open-air performing arts venue or as part of our Arts Access Initiative\, is a rewarding and inspired way to support the values\, purpose and the mission of the Joshua M. Freeman Foundation. \nWe maintain an extensive volunteer program to help provide operational support for the programs of the Joshua M. Freeman Foundation. Each year\, more than 250 volunteers contribute their time\, talent and energy and provide vital support to serve more than 60\,000 patrons who frequent the venue each season. \nIn 2021\, we hosted the inaugural season at Freeman Arts Pavilion while continuing to adhere to public health guidelines. 260 enthusiastic individuals helped us deliver exceptional arts experiences for our community and contributed more than 21000 volunteer hours to the 66 performances that comprised our 2021 season. Volunteers also donated more than 2\,000 hours safely assembling more than 30\,000 Creative Nourishment Art Kits for our Arts Education and Community Access programs. The impact of volunteer service is felt far and wide in our organization and we are grateful for each person and hour donated that help us fulfill our mission. \nAre you interested in joining us in 2022? Here are the expectations for volunteers: \n\nNew volunteers are screened to find the most suitable and safest volunteering experience for all involved.\nNew volunteers must attend one in-person spring orientation session.\nAll volunteers commit to working a minimum of 40 hours in a calendar year.\nAs part of the 40-hour commitment\, volunteers commit to two free performances or non-stage events such as venue set-up\, arts in education programs or fundraising events\nStudent volunteers are also welcome!\n\nStudents who are 16 years of age or older\, or approved by the Volunteer Coordinator\, are eligible to apply for the program.\nStudent volunteers commit to volunteer a minimum of 20 hours in a calendar year\, with 8 of those hours volunteering for free or non-stage events\n\n\n\nINTERESTED IN BECOMING A VOLUNTEER? Thankfully\, the Mid-Atlantic Symphony never quite closed its doors. It is nevertheless with a sense of joy and enthusiasm that we return to performing with our full orchestra. The choice of an orchestra-focused program to open our season is to celebrate this return and Beethoven’s Eroica will pay tribute to all the unsung heroes of the period we have just gone through. The second movement\, the Funeral March will pay homage to the victims of COVID-19. \n In our November concert\, the young American oboist Joshua Lauretig will delight us with Marcello and Vivaldi and the MSO strings will shine in Tchaikovsky’s lush Serenade. For Holiday Joy and New Year’s Eve we welcome two of the world’s foremost sopranos: Norah Amsellem\, who has sung as prima donna in every major house in the world and up and coming star Leah Hawkins who is currently on the Metropolitan Opera roster and being featured in several upcoming productions. \n In March\, stellar French cellist Dominique de Williencourt will join us for Saint-Saëns’ less played Cello Concerto #2\, a marvel to be discovered. Opening the program will be the winner of our second Elizabeth Loker Concerto Competition and closing it will be Schumann’s haunting and glorious Symphony #2. \n And because we want to celebrate life’s beauty and happiness\, the luminous Mozart Clarinet Concerto and Brahms Symphony No. 2 will close our Return of the Great Orchestral Works season. This year Lewes in Bloom funded the purchase of 26\,931 tulip and 3\,950 spring bulbs that were planted in fall 2021 by members of Lewes in Bloom.\nThe timing of the tulips’ appearance is an inexact science and either milder or colder weather in advance of the event dates can increase the probability that the dates of the celebration may not exactly coincide with the tulips blooming! The event dates (April 1-17) span three weekends. \nThe locations of the plantings will be identified on the map produced in association with the celebration. More than 100 varieties will be on display. \nTiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district. The map lists more than 20 locations where the bulbs were planted. SEE WORKS\n\n\n\n“We are thrilled to welcome back acclaimed artist\, Dane Tilghman\, for another solo exhibition. Dane is a premier painter of African American culture\, whose work is in numerous universities and major sports arenas\, in addition to being collected by celebrities like Nelson Mandela. \nFor the third year in a row\, Dane brings his larger-than-life artwork to our walls\, giving the people of Lewes the opportunity to bask in the grandeur of his impressionist-style paintings. \nThe ethos of Dane’s work is to bring awareness and attention to the lost history of African American communities throughout the US. Dane embraces an extravagant style and color palette to make Black life and culture from the early 20th Century the centerpiece of artistic admiration. He isn’t confined by artistic rules or forms\, opting to combine qualities of cubism\, impressionism\, and realism with palette knife work and various mediums to create textural pieces that come to life on the canvases. \nHis powerful\, yet poignant\, works remind viewers of the importance of a caring society for people of all color and creed\, not only in history but in the present and the future. \nDane Tilghman grew up in West Chester\, PA and has been a professional artist for nearly 40 years. His family was originally from Tilghman Island in the Chesapeake Bay before migrating to Dover and finally settling in Pennsylvania. \nHe is inspired by historic black and white images\, transforming a once static and unidimensional photograph into a vibrant and profound painting. For this show\, Dane and Tony Boyd-Heron\, Peninsula Gallery’s exhibition curator and co-owner\, visited the Delaware Archives to find photographs depicting Black life from the early 1900s. Tony said of the experience\, “we were disappointed by the little material showing the candid life and spirit of the African American communities in the archive.” \nDane says\, “Black people played just as much a role in the life-blood of Delaware as anywhere else. The working-class individuals depicted in my work\, whether they be working on the sea or on a farm\, were family-oriented; they had a purpose and were here to make a mark — even if that was just to make sure there was food on their table. But I believe everybody has a purpose. These individuals probably didn’t think they would be immortalized on canvas\, but they lived and served history just like anyone else.” \nA reception will be held on Saturday\, February 12\, from 5 to 6:30 pm\, and attendees will have the opportunity to mingle with Dane during the evening. The broad-based committee\, chaired by event founder Lewes Mayor Ted Becker\, includes Lewes in Bloom co-chairs and founder\, a representative from City of Lewes Parks and Recreation Commission and the Zwaanendael Museum. This year Lewes in Bloom funded the purchase of 26\,931 tulip and 3\,950 spring bulbs that were planted in fall 2021 by members of Lewes in Bloom.\nThe timing of the tulips’ appearance is an inexact science and either milder or colder weather in advance of the event dates can increase the probability that the dates of the celebration may not exactly coincide with the tulips blooming! The event dates (April 1-17) span three weekends. \nThe locations of the plantings will be identified on the map produced in association with the celebration. More than 100 varieties will be on display. \nTiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district. The map lists more than 20 locations where the bulbs were planted. Thankfully\, the Mid-Atlantic Symphony never quite closed its doors. It is nevertheless with a sense of joy and enthusiasm that we return to performing with our full orchestra. The choice of an orchestra-focused program to open our season is to celebrate this return and Beethoven’s Eroica will pay tribute to all the unsung heroes of the period we have just gone through. The second movement\, the Funeral March will pay homage to the victims of COVID-19. \n In our November concert\, the young American oboist Joshua Lauretig will delight us with Marcello and Vivaldi and the MSO strings will shine in Tchaikovsky’s lush Serenade. For Holiday Joy and New Year’s Eve we welcome two of the world’s foremost sopranos: Norah Amsellem\, who has sung as prima donna in every major house in the world and up and coming star Leah Hawkins who is currently on the Metropolitan Opera roster and being featured in several upcoming productions. \n In March\, stellar French cellist Dominique de Williencourt will join us for Saint-Saëns’ less played Cello Concerto #2\, a marvel to be discovered. Opening the program will be the winner of our second Elizabeth Loker Concerto Competition and closing it will be Schumann’s haunting and glorious Symphony #2. \n And because we want to celebrate life’s beauty and happiness\, the luminous Mozart Clarinet Concerto and Brahms Symphony No. 2 will close our Return of the Great Orchestral Works season.
