The broad-based committee\, chaired by event founder Lewes Mayor Ted Becker\, includes Lewes in Bloom co-chairs and founder\, a representative from City of Lewes Parks and Recreation Commission and the Zwaanendael Museum. This year Lewes in Bloom funded the purchase of 26\,931 tulip and 3\,950 spring bulbs that were planted in fall 2021 by members of Lewes in Bloom.\nThe timing of the tulips’ appearance is an inexact science and either milder or colder weather in advance of the event dates can increase the probability that the dates of the celebration may not exactly coincide with the tulips blooming! The event dates (April 1-17) span three weekends. \nThe locations of the plantings will be identified on the map produced in association with the celebration. More than 100 varieties will be on display. \nTiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district. The map lists more than 20 locations where the bulbs were planted. It also has a schedule of activities associated with the Tulip Celebration. \nTulip Sale: On April 15 & 16 Lewes in Bloom will be selling tulips at the Bank Street Plaza on Second Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. \nHistory in Bloom Walking Tours: The Lewes Historical Society and Lewes in Bloom are partnering to offer walking tours on Saturday\, April 2nd and Saturday\, April 9th at 10:30 a.m.\, 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  The tours will be led by a historic guide and will provide information on Lewes’ rich maritime history.  A knowledgeable guide from Lewes in Bloom will be on the tour to point out the multiple tulip varieties found around Lewes.  The tours begin at the Cannonball House’s back garden\, behind 118 Front Street. The tour cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Purchase tickets at www.historiclewes.org/visit/tours/html. \nFloral demonstrations and tulip sales: Ken Norman\, owner/designer at Floral Inspirations\, located on the beach side of the canal at 524 E. DESCRIPTION:Artist reception on February 12 from 5 – 6:30pm \n\nSolo Exhibition by Dane Tilghman\n\n\nAfrican American life inspired by historical scenes\n\n\nFebruary 12th – March 27th\n\n\nView The Show\n\n\nWorks are available for purchase as soon as they are posted. SEE WORKS\n\n\n\n“We are thrilled to welcome back acclaimed artist\, Dane Tilghman\, for another solo exhibition. Dane is a premier painter of African American culture\, whose work is in numerous universities and major sports arenas\, in addition to being collected by celebrities like Nelson Mandela. \nFor the third year in a row\, Dane brings his larger-than-life artwork to our walls\, giving the people of Lewes the opportunity to bask in the grandeur of his impressionist-style paintings. \nThe ethos of Dane’s work is to bring awareness and attention to the lost history of African American communities throughout the US. Dane embraces an extravagant style and color palette to make Black life and culture from the early 20th Century the centerpiece of artistic admiration. He isn’t confined by artistic rules or forms\, opting to combine qualities of cubism\, impressionism\, and realism with palette knife work and various mediums to create textural pieces that come to life on the canvases. \nHis powerful\, yet poignant\, works remind viewers of the importance of a caring society for people of all color and creed\, not only in history but in the present and the future. \nDane Tilghman grew up in West Chester\, PA and has been a professional artist for nearly 40 years. His family was originally from Tilghman Island in the Chesapeake Bay before migrating to Dover and finally settling in Pennsylvania. \nHe is inspired by historic black and white images\, transforming a once static and unidimensional photograph into a vibrant and profound painting. For this show\, Dane and Tony Boyd-Heron\, Peninsula Gallery’s exhibition curator and co-owner\, visited the Delaware Archives to find photographs depicting Black life from the early 1900s. Tony said of the experience\, “we were disappointed by the little material showing the candid life and spirit of the African American communities in the archive.” \nDane says\, “Black people played just as much a role in the life-blood of Delaware as anywhere else. The working-class individuals depicted in my work\, whether they be working on the sea or on a farm\, were family-oriented; they had a purpose and were here to make a mark — even if that was just to make sure there was food on their table. But I believe everybody has a purpose. These individuals probably didn’t think they would be immortalized on canvas\, but they lived and served history just like anyone else.” \nA reception will be held on Saturday\, February 12\, from 5 to 6:30 pm\, and attendees will have the opportunity to mingle with Dane during the evening. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district. It also has a schedule of activities associated with the Tulip Celebration. \nTulip Sale: On April 15 & 16 Lewes in Bloom will be selling tulips at the Bank Street Plaza on Second Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. \nHistory in Bloom Walking Tours: The Lewes Historical Society and Lewes in Bloom are partnering to offer walking tours on Saturday\, April 2nd and Saturday\, April 9th at 10:30 a.m.\, 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  The tours will be led by a historic guide and will provide information on Lewes’ rich maritime history.  A knowledgeable guide from Lewes in Bloom will be on the tour to point out the multiple tulip varieties found around Lewes.  The tours begin at the Cannonball House’s back garden\, behind 118 Front Street. DESCRIPTION:The Lewes Public Library Spoken Work Society presents the premiere public reading of a brand new work\, An Angel with Flowers; Broadway Bound in 2017 BC [Before Covid-19] by local playwright Jeffrey Dailey. Set in Lewes\, the play is a two-act tragicomedy following the lives of a couple enjoying retirement in their lovely home located in the beach environs\, contending with a pervasive loneliness and\, yes\, the suppressed consideration of losing life\, one before the other. In other words\, whose death will then end their longstanding relationship? It is that loneliness that stirs Donald Angel and John Flowers to seemingly pluck a nice young fellow – an artist\, to boot — out of life’s hustle and bustle and into by contrast\, their provincial lives. And\, never mind the young gent having appeared to them in a dream – a ruse\, perhaps? This is the foundation from which the play launches into broader and more abstract themes. Art and Nature and the creative process are pitted against lies and concealments both small and ‘huge’ and certainly they are consequential; consequential indeed\, to the point of propelling the play well beyond its limited\, local geography and on to realms of national and international security concerns.\nPlaywright Jeffrey Dailey’s pieces have garnered attention both in D.C. and in NYC. His piece Winter and Summer in May was given a reading and a workshop with “New Playwrights of D.C.” and was held under contract at NYC’s Circle in the Square. The broad-based committee\, chaired by event founder Lewes Mayor Ted Becker\, includes Lewes in Bloom co-chairs and founder\, a representative from City of Lewes Parks and Recreation Commission and the Zwaanendael Museum. This year Lewes in Bloom funded the purchase of 26\,931 tulip and 3\,950 spring bulbs that were planted in fall 2021 by members of Lewes in Bloom.\nThe timing of the tulips’ appearance is an inexact science and either milder or colder weather in advance of the event dates can increase the probability that the dates of the celebration may not exactly coincide with the tulips blooming! The event dates (April 1-17) span three weekends. \nThe locations of the plantings will be identified on the map produced in association with the celebration. More than 100 varieties will be on display. \nTiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district. The map lists more than 20 locations where the bulbs were planted. SUMMARY:CHSP Borrow a Bike\, Enjoy Cycling the Park to Warm Up on Winter Days!
DESCRIPTION:Winter Opening Hours  start November 1st\,  for the Bike Barn and\nNature Center:  Wednesday  thru Sunday ( closed  on Mondays & Tuesdays) 10am – 3pm  for the Barn\, 10am – 4pm Nature Center   Bikes can be borrowed for up to 2 hours weather permitting\, with last bikes out at 2 pm.  All bikes must be returned to the Bike Barn by 2:45 pm.\n We will be enforcing new procedures to ensure safety for our Bike Barn volunteers and visitors. This will include restricting access to the Bike Barn buildings – visitors will pick up and return bikes and helmets outside the Bike Barn.\n\n\nWe provide free loaner bikes…\nOne of the most popular activities provided by FOCHSP is” Borrow-a-Bike”. Here people can borrow a bike to ride within the park and see the sights for up to 2 hours…at no charge! That said\, we do gladly accept all donations to help us offset the cost of new bikes\, helmets and maintenance.  There is a  secure donation box  on the left front of the Barn.\nSince its start in 1997\, Borrow-a-Bike has always been operated entirely by volunteers and funded by donations. In 2014\, bikes were borrowed by around  13\,000 people and  that number  continues to  grow\, reaching more than 14\,000 in 2019\n \nBorrowers must complete the form provided inside the Nature Center and leave a photo-ID there for up to 5 riders\, prior to picking up bikes. \n Groups larger than 10 must  email or  call us ahead of time to schedule your  requirements  –  FOCHSP@gmail.com   302-858-6127 \n\nAll riders under 18 must wear helmets.\nOrange cones will be placed at 6-foot intervals; groups must stay at the next available cone until it is their turn to pick up bikes.\nBikes will be available for pickup at the bike racks located between the Nature Center and Bike Barn.\nBikes and helmets are to be returned on the opposite side of the Bike Barn.\nBikes must stay on trails and in the Park at all times\nBikes must be returned within 2 hours\, but no later than 2:45 p.m.\nPlease check back here regularly as days and hours of operation may be subject to change\n\n\nFind more great park info: https://destateparks.com/Beaches/CapeHenlopen\nThe Story of Borrow-A- Bike \nThe Borrow-A-Bike program began with a plan in 1997 and has always been operated by volunteers. In 1999\, a $3\,000 grant from The Delaware Bicycle Council enabled the purchase of 15 bikes that were housed in a shed built by the Lion’s Club. Additional donations — including $1\,000 from Dupont — increased the program to 35 bicycles operated from a new shed supplied by the Friends. The current “Bike Barn”  which stands next to the Nature Center was built from scratch in 2009 by Friends volunteers under the leadership of Stan Lemiska\, Chuck Moore\, and Carl Lofgren. Today\, the program includes  more than 40 adult  bicycles\, including 2 with baby carriers\, 12 children’s bicycles\, and  2 double baby trailers.  Due to the  popularity of the program a second  Bike Barn has recently  been built  behind the existing one.
