This year Lewes in Bloom funded the purchase of 26\,931 tulip and 3\,950 spring bulbs that were planted in fall 2021 by members of Lewes in Bloom.\nThe timing of the tulips’ appearance is an inexact science and either milder or colder weather in advance of the event dates can increase the probability that the dates of the celebration may not exactly coincide with the tulips blooming! The event dates (April 1-17) span three weekends. \nThe locations of the plantings will be identified on the map produced in association with the celebration. More than 100 varieties will be on display. \nTiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district. The map lists more than 20 locations where the bulbs were planted. It also has a schedule of activities associated with the Tulip Celebration. \nTulip Sale: On April 15 & 16 Lewes in Bloom will be selling tulips at the Bank Street Plaza on Second Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. \nHistory in Bloom Walking Tours: The Lewes Historical Society and Lewes in Bloom are partnering to offer walking tours on Saturday\, April 2nd and Saturday\, April 9th at 10:30 a.m.\, 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  The tours will be led by a historic guide and will provide information on Lewes’ rich maritime history.  A knowledgeable guide from Lewes in Bloom will be on the tour to point out the multiple tulip varieties found around Lewes.  The tours begin at the Cannonball House’s back garden\, behind 118 Front Street. DESCRIPTION:Sussex Bird Club | Plant It and They Will Come\, with Ashley Kennedy\nSunday\, February 13 | 2:00 PM Eastern Time | Online and In-Person\nYour yard might look beautiful\, but how do you know if it’s contributing to the local ecosystem? Numerous studies from around the world suggest that insect populations are currently in decline. This in turn\, affects birds who rely on insects for food. To determine which insects are most important in bird diets\, Ashley Kennedy\, a board-certified entomologist\, conducted a citizen science project \n \nAshley Kennedy is a Board-Certified Entomologist\, a Science Policy Fellow of the Entomological Society of America\, and an environmental scientist for the state of Delaware. She completed internships/seasonal positions at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center\, the National Zoo\, and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and studied animal behavior during her undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University. Her doctoral dissertation research in Doug Tallamy’s lab at the University of Delaware focused on bird-insect food webs\, specifically\, investigating which insects are the most important in birds’ diets. \nShe crowd-sourced images of birds with their arthropod prey. More than 7\,000 photos were contributed by participants across North America\, demonstrating that caterpillars are the preferred prey for most terrestrial breeding birds. If you want to turn your yard into a better wildlife habitat\, come learn about the food webs that connect plants\, insects\, and birds so you too\, can make a difference! \n \n  \n  \nOur general meetings are open to everyone and are held 8 months a year: \nJanuary\, February\, March\, April\, May\, September\, October\, and November. \nThe meetings are held at the Lewes Public Library\, 111 Adams Ave.\, Lewes\, Delaware\, on the second Sunday of the month at 2 pm. \nEach month we have a guest speaker with an interesting presentation about birds. Come early to socialize before the official program! \n  \nThe Sussex Bird Club was formed in 1982 by its first president Bill Fintel\, and has grown to over 100 members. Meetings are held at the Lewes Public Library seven times a year\, generally on the second Sunday of the month. (There are no meetings in June\, July\, August\, or December.) Business transactions are kept short\, and there is always an interesting program related to wild birds. The Sussex Bird Club’s primary objective is to promote the knowledge and enjoyment of wild birds through guided field trips and monthly meetings about various aspects of birding. Our meetings\, field trips\, and events are open to all. We have an exciting schedule of field trips to the many outstanding birding areas within Sussex County\, as well as trips to birding hotspots beyond Delaware’s borders. Beginning birders are always welcome\, and birders of all levels will enjoy the camaraderie and the variety of birding experiences.  Our members are interested in bird conservation\, and many volunteer in other capacities\, such as monitoring piping plover nests or supporting the Hawk Watch at Cape Henlopen State Park. Dane is a premier painter of African American culture\, whose work is in numerous universities and major sports arenas\, in addition to being collected by celebrities like Nelson Mandela. \nFor the third year in a row\, Dane brings his larger-than-life artwork to our walls\, giving the people of Lewes the opportunity to bask in the grandeur of his impressionist-style paintings. \nThe ethos of Dane’s work is to bring awareness and attention to the lost history of African American communities throughout the US. Dane embraces an extravagant style and color palette to make Black life and culture from the early 20th Century the centerpiece of artistic admiration. He isn’t confined by artistic rules or forms\, opting to combine qualities of cubism\, impressionism\, and realism with palette knife work and various mediums to create textural pieces that come to life on the canvases. \nHis powerful\, yet poignant\, works remind viewers of the importance of a caring society for people of all color and creed\, not only in history but in the present and the future. \nDane Tilghman grew up in West Chester\, PA and has been a professional artist for nearly 40 years. His family was originally from Tilghman Island in the Chesapeake Bay before migrating to Dover and finally settling in Pennsylvania. \nHe is inspired by historic black and white images\, transforming a once static and unidimensional photograph into a vibrant and profound painting. For this show\, Dane and Tony Boyd-Heron\, Peninsula Gallery’s exhibition curator and co-owner\, visited the Delaware Archives to find photographs depicting Black life from the early 1900s. Tony said of the experience\, “we were disappointed by the little material showing the candid life and spirit of the African American communities in the archive.” \nDane says\, “Black people played just as much a role in the life-blood of Delaware as anywhere else. The working-class individuals depicted in my work\, whether they be working on the sea or on a farm\, were family-oriented; they had a purpose and were here to make a mark — even if that was just to make sure there was food on their table. But I believe everybody has a purpose. These individuals probably didn’t think they would be immortalized on canvas\, but they lived and served history just like anyone else.” \nA reception will be held on Saturday\, February 12\, from 5 to 6:30 pm\, and attendees will have the opportunity to mingle with Dane during the evening. This year Lewes in Bloom funded the purchase of 26\,931 tulip and 3\,950 spring bulbs that were planted in fall 2021 by members of Lewes in Bloom.\nThe timing of the tulips’ appearance is an inexact science and either milder or colder weather in advance of the event dates can increase the probability that the dates of the celebration may not exactly coincide with the tulips blooming! The event dates (April 1-17) span three weekends. \nThe locations of the plantings will be identified on the map produced in association with the celebration. More than 100 varieties will be on display. \nTiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district. The map lists more than 20 locations where the bulbs were planted. It also has a schedule of activities associated with the Tulip Celebration. \nTulip Sale: On April 15 & 16 Lewes in Bloom will be selling tulips at the Bank Street Plaza on Second Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. \nHistory in Bloom Walking Tours: The Lewes Historical Society and Lewes in Bloom are partnering to offer walking tours on Saturday\, April 2nd and Saturday\, April 9th at 10:30 a.m.\, 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  The tours will be led by a historic guide and will provide information on Lewes’ rich maritime history.  A knowledgeable guide from Lewes in Bloom will be on the tour to point out the multiple tulip varieties found around Lewes.  The tours begin at the Cannonball House’s back garden\, behind 118 Front Street. The event dates (April 1-17) span three weekends. \nThe locations of the plantings will be identified on the map produced in association with the celebration. More than 100 varieties will be on display. \nTiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. SUMMARY:Delmarva Travel Club\, monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Big Fish Grill on Route 1 in Rehoboth\, every second Wednesday evening. We will begin with a social time at 5\, beginning at 6 from September through May..  If you want to take advantage of Happy Hour drink prices\, you will have to purchase them at the bar.  Servers will be available for those who want to order other drinks in our meeting room.  We will have a short business meeting during this hour followed by dinner (you purchase your own) and then a fellow traveler’s presentation. \nThe Delmarva Bucket List Travel Club is a group who meet monthly for presentations about different parts of the world given by its members.  It was founded in 2016 by Sue Fox\, a retired college professor\, who developed and led college study trips to different parts of Italy\, including Sicily; Ireland; Andalusia\, Spain; and Paris and Bruges\, together with trips to the California Bay Country (San Francisco and Monterey) and Santa Fe\, New Mexico. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt is open to all who love to learn about the world\, including those who have traveled\, those who can no longer travel\, and those who wish to travel. The club has had presentations on many countries in Latin America\, Europe\, the Middle East\, Africa\, and Asia. \nThe club sponsored a trip to Venice\, Vicenza\, Padua\, Lucca\, Florence\, Assisi\, and Rome in November 2017 and to Bordeaux\, France for a Scenic Diamond River Cruise with a pre-trip to Bilbao and San Sebastian\, Spain\, and a post-trip to Paris in October 2018.  In October of 2019\, the club trip was to Ireland.  In September of 2021\, the club trip is to Sicily with a pre-trip to Naples and the Amalfi Coast and a post-trip to Malta.  TO view FUTURE TRIPS: Click Here \n \nAll info and pics from the group website: https://delmarvatravelclub.org/ \nAll meetings begin at 6 with drinks and dinner\, followed by the program.
