DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Rehoboth Beach Film Society will once again present “The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD” 2021 – 22 season at the Cinema Art Theater. This award-winning series will feature live transmissions of ten spectacular productions. \nSince its initial broadcast in 2006 “The Met: Live in HD” has grown exponentially with classical music lovers from around the world proving opera can have a place in their local movie theaters. It is now the largest provider of alternative cinema content in the world that reaches more than 2\,000+ venues in countries across six continents. \nThe season begins on Mon\, Oct 18 with Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov. SUMMARY:CHSP Borrow a Bike\, Enjoy Cycling the Park to Warm Up on Winter Days!
DESCRIPTION:Winter Opening Hours  start November 1st\,  for the Bike Barn and\nNature Center:  Wednesday  thru Sunday ( closed  on Mondays & Tuesdays) 10am – 3pm  for the Barn\, 10am – 4pm Nature Center   Bikes can be borrowed for up to 2 hours weather permitting\, with last bikes out at 2 pm.  All bikes must be returned to the Bike Barn by 2:45 pm.\n We will be enforcing new procedures to ensure safety for our Bike Barn volunteers and visitors. This will include restricting access to the Bike Barn buildings – visitors will pick up and return bikes and helmets outside the Bike Barn.\n\n\nWe provide free loaner bikes…\nOne of the most popular activities provided by FOCHSP is” Borrow-a-Bike”. Here people can borrow a bike to ride within the park and see the sights for up to 2 hours…at no charge! That said\, we do gladly accept all donations to help us offset the cost of new bikes\, helmets and maintenance.  There is a  secure donation box  on the left front of the Barn.\nSince its start in 1997\, Borrow-a-Bike has always been operated entirely by volunteers and funded by donations. In 2014\, bikes were borrowed by around  13\,000 people and  that number  continues to  grow\, reaching more than 14\,000 in 2019\n \nBorrowers must complete the form provided inside the Nature Center and leave a photo-ID there for up to 5 riders\, prior to picking up bikes. \n Groups larger than 10 must  email or  call us ahead of time to schedule your  requirements  –  FOCHSP@gmail.com   302-858-6127 \n\nAll riders under 18 must wear helmets.\nOrange cones will be placed at 6-foot intervals; groups must stay at the next available cone until it is their turn to pick up bikes.\nBikes will be available for pickup at the bike racks located between the Nature Center and Bike Barn.\nBikes and helmets are to be returned on the opposite side of the Bike Barn.\nBikes must stay on trails and in the Park at all times\nBikes must be returned within 2 hours\, but no later than 2:45 p.m.\nPlease check back here regularly as days and hours of operation may be subject to change\n\n\nFind more great park info: https://destateparks.com/Beaches/CapeHenlopen\nThe Story of Borrow-A- Bike \nThe Borrow-A-Bike program began with a plan in 1997 and has always been operated by volunteers. In 1999\, a $3\,000 grant from The Delaware Bicycle Council enabled the purchase of 15 bikes that were housed in a shed built by the Lion’s Club. Additional donations — including $1\,000 from Dupont — increased the program to 35 bicycles operated from a new shed supplied by the Friends. The current “Bike Barn”  which stands next to the Nature Center was built from scratch in 2009 by Friends volunteers under the leadership of Stan Lemiska\, Chuck Moore\, and Carl Lofgren. Today\, the program includes  more than 40 adult  bicycles\, including 2 with baby carriers\, 12 children’s bicycles\, and  2 double baby trailers.  Due to the  popularity of the program a second  Bike Barn has recently  been built  behind the existing one. This will also  free up much needed space  for the ongoing maintenance  and repairs of the bikes. \nInterested in Volunteering?  \nWe always need  volunteers to  act as “ambassadors”  who help  our visitors select the right bike for their needs\, and/or  as mechanics to service and make running repairs  to our fleet.   If you would like to volunteer and want to know more about what is involved  please stop by the Barn  which is next to the Nature Center anytime we are open \,  or  go to “contact us” on this site and   call or email us.  You will receive a very warm welcome to our group for however much or little time you are able to give.\n​Info and pics from Friends of CHSP website

The broad-based committee\, chaired by event founder Lewes Mayor Ted Becker\, includes Lewes in Bloom co-chairs and founder\, a representative from City of Lewes Parks and Recreation Commission and the Zwaanendael Museum. This year Lewes in Bloom funded the purchase of 26\,931 tulip and 3\,950 spring bulbs that were planted in fall 2021 by members of Lewes in Bloom.\nThe timing of the tulips’ appearance is an inexact science and either milder or colder weather in advance of the event dates can increase the probability that the dates of the celebration may not exactly coincide with the tulips blooming! The event dates (April 1-17) span three weekends. \nThe locations of the plantings will be identified on the map produced in association with the celebration. More than 100 varieties will be on display. \nTiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district. The map lists more than 20 locations where the bulbs were planted. It also has a schedule of activities associated with the Tulip Celebration. \nTulip Sale: On April 15 & 16 Lewes in Bloom will be selling tulips at the Bank Street Plaza on Second Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. \nHistory in Bloom Walking Tours: The Lewes Historical Society and Lewes in Bloom are partnering to offer walking tours on Saturday\, April 2nd and Saturday\, April 9th at 10:30 a.m.\, 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  The tours will be led by a historic guide and will provide information on Lewes’ rich maritime history.  A knowledgeable guide from Lewes in Bloom will be on the tour to point out the multiple tulip varieties found around Lewes.  The tours begin at the Cannonball House’s back garden\, behind 118 Front Street. The tour cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. This year Lewes in Bloom funded the purchase of 26\,931 tulip and 3\,950 spring bulbs that were planted in fall 2021 by members of Lewes in Bloom.\nThe timing of the tulips’ appearance is an inexact science and either milder or colder weather in advance of the event dates can increase the probability that the dates of the celebration may not exactly coincide with the tulips blooming! The event dates (April 1-17) span three weekends. \nThe locations of the plantings will be identified on the map produced in association with the celebration. More than 100 varieties will be on display. \nTiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district. The map lists more than 20 locations where the bulbs were planted. It also has a schedule of activities associated with the Tulip Celebration. \nTulip Sale: On April 15 & 16 Lewes in Bloom will be selling tulips at the Bank Street Plaza on Second Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. \nHistory in Bloom Walking Tours: The Lewes Historical Society and Lewes in Bloom are partnering to offer walking tours on Saturday\, April 2nd and Saturday\, April 9th at 10:30 a.m.\, 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  The tours will be led by a historic guide and will provide information on Lewes’ rich maritime history.  A knowledgeable guide from Lewes in Bloom will be on the tour to point out the multiple tulip varieties found around Lewes.  The tours begin at the Cannonball House’s back garden\, behind 118 Front Street. DESCRIPTION:Sussex Bird Club | Plant It and They Will Come\, with Ashley Kennedy\nSunday\, February 13 | 2:00 PM Eastern Time | Online and In-Person\nYour yard might look beautiful\, but how do you know if it’s contributing to the local ecosystem? Numerous studies from around the world suggest that insect populations are currently in decline. This in turn\, affects birds who rely on insects for food. To determine which insects are most important in bird diets\, Ashley Kennedy\, a board-certified entomologist\, conducted a citizen science project \n \nAshley Kennedy is a Board-Certified Entomologist\, a Science Policy Fellow of the Entomological Society of America\, and an environmental scientist for the state of Delaware. She completed internships/seasonal positions at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center\, the National Zoo\, and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and studied animal behavior during her undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University. Her doctoral dissertation research in Doug Tallamy’s lab at the University of Delaware focused on bird-insect food webs\, specifically\, investigating which insects are the most important in birds’ diets. \nShe crowd-sourced images of birds with their arthropod prey. More than 7\,000 photos were contributed by participants across North America\, demonstrating that caterpillars are the preferred prey for most terrestrial breeding birds. If you want to turn your yard into a better wildlife habitat\, come learn about the food webs that connect plants\, insects\, and birds so you too\, can make a difference! \n \n  \n  \nOur general meetings are open to everyone and are held 8 months a year: \nJanuary\, February\, March\, April\, May\, September\, October\, and November. \nThe meetings are held at the Lewes Public Library\, 111 Adams Ave.\, Lewes\, Delaware\, on the second Sunday of the month at 2 pm. \nEach month we have a guest speaker with an interesting presentation about birds. Come early to socialize before the official program! \n  \nThe Sussex Bird Club was formed in 1982 by its first president Bill Fintel\, and has grown to over 100 members. Meetings are held at the Lewes Public Library seven times a year\, generally on the second Sunday of the month. (There are no meetings in June\, July\, August\, or December.) Business transactions are kept short\, and there is always an interesting program related to wild birds. The Sussex Bird Club’s primary objective is to promote the knowledge and enjoyment of wild birds through guided field trips and monthly meetings about various aspects of birding. Our meetings\, field trips\, and events are open to all. We have an exciting schedule of field trips to the many outstanding birding areas within Sussex County\, as well as trips to birding hotspots beyond Delaware’s borders.
