Join us for a conversation with Devery Anderson\, author of Emmett Till: The Murder That Shocked the World and Propelled the Civil Rights Movement. Ronald Collins\, a retired law professor and the Library’s first Distinguished Lecturer\, will host the session\, which is meant for laypersons and specialists alike. \n\n \nIt is often said the modern civil rights movement began in 1955 with the brutal murder of 14-year old Emmett Till and the subsequent acquittal of the two white men who murdered him. No work better captures the Emmet Till story – from beginning to end and beyond – than Anderson’s comprehensive Emmett Till. The book inspired the January 2022 six-and-a-half-hour ABC TV series\, Women of the Movement. Anderson spent three weeks on location last March in Sumner\, Mississippi\, where he played one of the twelve jurors in the murder trial scenes filmed for this series. \nDevery Anderson earned a BA in history from the University of Utah and a Master’s in publishing from George Washington University. He is the editor or co-editor of four books related to Mormons and the West\, two of which won the Steven F. Christensen Award for Best Documentary from the Mormon History Association in 2006. His forthcoming book\, A Slow\, Calculated Lynching: The Story of Clyde Kennard\, will be published next fall. He is the marketing manager for Signature Books\, a scholarly publishing house in Salt Lake City\, Utah\, and is the father of three children and the grandfather of two. \nRonald Collins is the former Harold S. Shefelman scholar at the University of Washington Law School. He served as a Supreme Court fellow for Chief Justice Warren Burger. He is the editor of the weekly blog First Amendment News and is on the editorial board of SCOTUSblog. He is also the co-chair of The First Amendment Salons and the co-director of the History Book Festival. He is the author of some dozen books. He has taught a class on the Emmett Till tragedy three times\, the first of which was offered under the auspices of the Lewes Public Library. This year Lewes in Bloom funded the purchase of 26\,931 tulip and 3\,950 spring bulbs that were planted in fall 2021 by members of Lewes in Bloom.\nThe timing of the tulips’ appearance is an inexact science and either milder or colder weather in advance of the event dates can increase the probability that the dates of the celebration may not exactly coincide with the tulips blooming! The event dates (April 1-17) span three weekends. \nThe locations of the plantings will be identified on the map produced in association with the celebration. More than 100 varieties will be on display. \nTiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district. The map lists more than 20 locations where the bulbs were planted. It also has a schedule of activities associated with the Tulip Celebration. \nTulip Sale: On April 15 & 16 Lewes in Bloom will be selling tulips at the Bank Street Plaza on Second Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. \nHistory in Bloom Walking Tours: The Lewes Historical Society and Lewes in Bloom are partnering to offer walking tours on Saturday\, April 2nd and Saturday\, April 9th at 10:30 a.m.\, 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  The tours will be led by a historic guide and will provide information on Lewes’ rich maritime history.  A knowledgeable guide from Lewes in Bloom will be on the tour to point out the multiple tulip varieties found around Lewes.  The tours begin at the Cannonball House’s back garden\, behind 118 Front Street. The tour cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. This award-winning series will feature live transmissions of ten spectacular productions. \nSince its initial broadcast in 2006 “The Met: Live in HD” has grown exponentially with classical music lovers from around the world proving opera can have a place in their local movie theaters. The broad-based committee\, chaired by event founder Lewes Mayor Ted Becker\, includes Lewes in Bloom co-chairs and founder\, a representative from City of Lewes Parks and Recreation Commission and the Zwaanendael Museum. This year Lewes in Bloom funded the purchase of 26\,931 tulip and 3\,950 spring bulbs that were planted in fall 2021 by members of Lewes in Bloom.\nThe timing of the tulips’ appearance is an inexact science and either milder or colder weather in advance of the event dates can increase the probability that the dates of the celebration may not exactly coincide with the tulips blooming! The event dates (April 1-17) span three weekends. \nThe locations of the plantings will be identified on the map produced in association with the celebration. More than 100 varieties will be on display. \nTiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district. The map lists more than 20 locations where the bulbs were planted. It also has a schedule of activities associated with the Tulip Celebration. \nTulip Sale: On April 15 & 16 Lewes in Bloom will be selling tulips at the Bank Street Plaza on Second Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. \nHistory in Bloom Walking Tours: The Lewes Historical Society and Lewes in Bloom are partnering to offer walking tours on Saturday\, April 2nd and Saturday\, April 9th at 10:30 a.m.\, 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  The tours will be led by a historic guide and will provide information on Lewes’ rich maritime history.  A knowledgeable guide from Lewes in Bloom will be on the tour to point out the multiple tulip varieties found around Lewes.  The tours begin at the Cannonball House’s back garden\, behind 118 Front Street. The tour cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.
