SUMMARY:Truman Capote’s “A Thanksgiving Visitor” (Lewes Library Performance Series)
DESCRIPTION:Truman Capote’s “A Thanksgiving Visitor”: Friday\, November 19 | 7:00 PM Eastern Time | In-person  \nPopular storytelling duo Suzanne Savoy and Jack Herholdt perform a rendition of Capote’s heartwarming coming of age story. Scholars believe this story\, and its companion (see below)\, is as autobiographical as Capote ever was. To pre-read both of these short stories in one book\, the library\, as well as Browseabout Books carries this gift-worthy book.  \n“Back by popular demand – Suzanne Savoy and Jack Herholdt conduct a live reading of “The Thanksgiving Visitor” by Truman Capote. Savoy and Herboldt first performed this piece online at the library in 2020. They appear in person this year to share their remarkable gifts of story-telling just in time for the holiday season.\nNine-year-old Buddy has a problem. Every day\, he gets stopped on the way to school by Odd Henderson\, who calls Buddy a sissy\, pins him to the ground and rubs burrs into his head. Miss Sook\, Buddy’s older cousin and best friend\, invites Odd to her big Thanksgiving dinner\, where important lessons await both Odd and Buddy.\n“The Thanksgiving Visitor” was first published in McCall’s Magazine in 1967\, and is a companion piece to “A Christmas Memory\,” which will Savoy and Herboldt will perform at the Library on Saturday\, November 21\, 2021.” -https://lewes.lib.de.us/2021/06/24/spoken-word-society-and-shakespeare-festival/\n \n  \nThe list of events and resources available at the Lewes Public Library astounds! Lectures\, workshops\, author presentations and performances. Children’s programming\, book clubs – and even a financial education series. The library’s calendar is almost overwhelming.  \nHere\, we focus on the Lewes Library’s Performance Series\, the Spoken Word Society and Shakespeare Festival. Don’t let the Shakespeare reference fool you – it’s symbolic for the most part\, although there are some events that involve Shakespeare readings and performances. As for the spoken word\, literary works are performed and discussed\, bringing stories to life.  \nThese events are free\, but reservations are required for certain programs\, so it’s wise to do a little browsing on the library’s website to be sure.  \nOTHER UPCOMING PERFORMANCES for the remainder of 2021 include the following. \nTruman Capote’s “A Christmas Memory”: Saturday\, November 20 | 7:00 PM Eastern Time | In-person  \nBack to back performance of Capote’s seasonal favorite that continues to explore his storytelling from the eyes of seven-year-old Buddy. This Christmas story reenactment event will be repeated closer to the holiday on Friday\, December 17th at 7 PM.  \nCharles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”: Friday\, December 10 | 7:00 PM Eastern Time | In-person  \nDon’t miss the chance to see the performance by Gerald Dickens\, the great great grandson of Charles Dickens. Captivating audiences all over the world with his talents\, and performing in major venues\, actor\, writer and producer Gerald Dickens will act out a rendition of A Christmas Carol as 30 different characters!  \nMake those reservations and don’t miss out on Lewes Library’s unique and exceptional offerings to the public. As you can see\, libraries are not just about books!  \n

SUMMARY:Sussex County Annual Food Drive
DESCRIPTION:“The 38th annual food drive kicks off [Nov 1] and runs through the end of December. The public is asked to do their part to “Pack the Pod” – a 14-foot by 7-foot portable storage shed that will be set up at The Circle later this month – with donated food items. \nIn 2019\, before the pandemic\, the drive collected nearly 30\,000 items for local food pantries. Since its inception in the 1980s\, Caroling on The Circle [‘kick off event’] has raised nearly 750\,000 food items. \nCounty Administrator Todd F. Lawson said Caroling on The Circle helps bring the community closer\, a familiar theme especially in the past year and a half as communities across the nation and around the world have worked together to overcome the challenges caused or heightened by the coronavirus pandemic. \n“The last couple of years have changed the world in so many ways\, right down to our personal routines and how we live our day-to-day lives\,” Mr. Lawson said. “What hasn’t changed\, though\, is that giving spirit that has always been so strong in Sussex County\, and made this community so special. We didn’t need a pandemic to prove that to ourselves. It’s on display every day in this community\, and I’m proud that we are able to continue that tradition with Caroling on The Circle and the ‘Pack the Pod’ food drive this year.” \nDonations of food items can be dropped off from now until the end of December\, at the County Administrative Offices building\, next to the courthouse\, in Georgetown. Receptacles will be available outside the County complex\, allowing the public to make ‘no contact’ drops 24 hours a day throughout the holiday season. Staff will routinely collect items and ‘Pack the Pod’ before delivering food to pantries. \nFor more information\, call (302) 855-7700.” info from website: https://sussexcountyde.gov/news/sussex-county-kicks-annual-food-drive-announces-caroling-circle-return \nDrop off non-perishables at Administrative Offices in outdoor receptacles.

Experience is not necessary. Veteran Hawk Watch  members will  answer any questions you may have\, and provide training. There is always a need for an extra pair of eyes\, if only to point out a bird and ask  “What is that?”   New volunteers are always welcome\, so come and join the  Hawk Watch for as little or as much time as you choose. You do not have to be a “birder” to participate\, but you will leave being a birder for life! \nThe Hawk Watch operates under a Fish & Wildlife grant that is contingent in part on the Hawk Watch’s ability to solicit volunteer hours. The Friends supports this group and a number of its members also volunteer their time at The Hawk Watch. We always looking for more people to come learn\, enjoy and help.

More than 100 varieties will be on display. \nTiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district.
