SUMMARY:Banned Books/Silenced Voices
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Banned Books Week\, the Lewes Public Library\, ACLU of Delaware\, Groome Church\, and Browseabout Books welcome Del Shakes Artistic Squad. \nLibraries in every state are facing an unprecedented number of attempts to ban books. In 2022 the American Library Association documented 1\,269 demands to censor library books and resources\, the highest number of attempted book bans since they began compiling data about censorship in libraries more than 20 years ago. \nWhen books are banned\, the voices of the author and the characters are silenced and readers are closed off to people\, places\, and perspectives. By standing up for stories\, the power that lies inside every book is unleashed\, and the array of voices that need to be heard and the scenes that need to be seen are liberated. Join us in the library or online as members of Del Shakes Artistic Squad bring the strength and the beauty of banned texts to life through dramatic readings. Stay afterwards for a moderated discussion led by Dr. Adenike Davidson on the readings and the issue of banning books. \nProfessional actors Mariah Ghant and Eric Mills\, both members of Del Shakes Artistic Squad\, will highlight the evening. Mariah often works with DelShakes\, playing the title role of Macbeth in their 2023 summer production in Wilmington. She also works as the Artistic Associate and Library Manager for the Wilma Theater in Philadelphia. Mariah developed and produced last season’s readings of Black Lucy\, Redux for the Lewes Public Library’s Shakespeare Festival. Eric Mills is a member of Del Shakes Artistic Squad and an avid reader. He has worked as an actor with many regional and local theaters and in the distant past dabbled in TV. He recently directed Shakespeare’s Playground for DelShakes and teaches theater around the region. He is thrilled to be back on stage with the incomparable Mariah Ghant. \nAdenike Marie Davidson is a professor of Literature and Gender Studies at Delaware State University and serves as the Board Chair for Delaware Humanities. Dr. Davidson is the author of the book\, The Black Nation Novel: Imaging Homplaces in Early African American Literature. Her scholarship focuses on reclaiming lost voices and texts\, understanding race and gender across texts and eras\, and connecting canonical and non-canonical texts to further examine the American experience. \nRegistration is required. \n\n\n\n\nEvent date:\n\nFriday\, October 6\, 2023 – 5:00pm to 6:30pm\n\n\n\nEvent address:\n\n\n\n111 Adams Avenue\n\nLewes\, DE 19958\n\n\n\n\nEvent Category:\n\nLewes Library Partner Event | Online\nLewes Library Partner Event | In-Person\nALL INFO AND PICS FROM WEBSITE: https://www.browseaboutbooks.com/event/banned-bookssilenced-voices

SUMMARY:Tournament of Banned Book
DESCRIPTION:Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read and spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. For more than 40 years\, the annual event has brought together the entire book community — librarians\, teachers\, booksellers\, publishers\, writers\, journalists\, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas\, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. The theme for Banned Books Week 2023 is “Let Freedom Read.”  \nThe Lewes Public Library\, ACLU of Delaware\, Groome Church\, and Browseabout Books are celebrating Banned Books Week with the library’s first ever Tournament of Banned Books. \nShow your love for Banned Books and join in the fight against censorship by voting for your favorite titles! When we stand up for stories\, we unleash the power in every book and every voice. \nCome back every day to select your favorite Banned Books from each of the four categories: Adult\, Classics\, Teens\, and Children. Voting is available online or in-person at the library. Be sure to stay tuned for the big reveal of Lewes Public Library’s favorite Banned Book of 2023 on Saturday\, October 7! \nVoting starts Monday\, October 2nd! \nWant to find out why the Tournament books were banned or challenged? Learn more here and find them in our catalog.

SUMMARY:Farmers Market @ Lewes7
DESCRIPTION:Who We Are\n\n\nPhoto by Helaine Harris\nThe Historic Lewes Farmers Market (HLFM) is a non-profit\, community-based\, producer-only\, farmers market. Started in the summer of 2006 by a group of volunteers\, the market has expanded to 30 plus vendors. \nWhat is a Community-based\, Producer-Only Farmers Market and How is it Different?\nA community-based\, producer-only farmers market is not just another retail enterprise. It is part of a growing environmental movement pioneering ways to save the land\, provide small farmers and small producers a way to stay in business\, and to educate our children about the food that we eat. \nIn addition to fresh produce\, eggs\, fruits\, breads\, baked goods\, meats\, fish\, cut-flowers and herbs\, the HLFM features workshops by local chefs (using food from the market)\, master gardeners\, wellness providers\, and sustainable agriculture experts. Best of all\, the market is a place where every Saturday and Wednesday mornings we meet our neighbors and make new friends\, making our community much stronger. \nPeople worldwide are rediscovering the benefits of buying local food. It is fresher than anything in the supermarket\, and that means that it tastes great and is more nutritious. It is also good for our local economy buying directly from family farmers and producers helps them keep their land. \n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy a Farmers Market in Lewes\, Delaware?\nThere have been numerous markets in and around the Lewes area for many decades. The historic square behind King’s Ice Cream (201 Second Street) has been documented as the site of an early market.  We have two locations in Lewes\, Delaware. Our Saturday market is located in the heart of Lewes\, Delaware\, and our Wednesday Market is also located in Lewes\, near Route 1. \nWhat is the HLFM Epworth Food Pantry Program?\nThe Historic Lewes Farmers (HLFM) partners with the Epworth United Methodist Church Food Pantry. HLFM customers who want to help feed the local community with fresh local food may purchase produce\, meats\, milk\, and other food from growers at the Market to donate to the Epworth program every Saturday. It’s so easy–all you have to do is let the vendor know what you want to donate or give $5\, $10\, $25 to the vendor and ask them to put together a selection for Epworth. You can also pre-order for Epworth from HLFM vendors that take pre-orders. At the end of the Market\, the produce and other foods are gathered and picked up by Epworth volunteers. We thank you for your generosity\, and if you have any questions\, please contact us: info@historiclewesfarmersmarket.org. \nWhat is the HLFM Gleaning Program?\nThe HLFM gleans (collects donations of extra produce) from the vendors at the end of each Saturday market\, organizes the produce\, and donates the excess produce to Casa San Francisco in Milton\, DE\, a charity which runs an Emergency Shelter\, a Food Cooperative and an Emergency Food Pantry. Over the past 13 years\, this program resulted in donations of over $55\,000 worth of fresh local food to Casa San Francisco. \n\n \n\n\n \n\nJoin Us!\nThe Historic Lewes Farmers Market needs volunteers. The volunteers help set up and take down the market every Saturday. They assist the chefs and others putting on market demonstrations\, and\, in general\, help the vendors during the market hours. You don’t need to have any expertise to volunteer. \nIf you’re interested in spending a few hours on a Saturday between May and November\, helping us at the market\, or want to volunteer to help us in other ways throughout the year\, please call us at 302-644-1436 or send an email to info@historiclewesfarmersmarket.org. \n
