SUMMARY:Crossroads: Change in Rural America
DESCRIPTION:EXHIBIT at Oceanview DE \nFREE TO THE PUBLIC \nOpen Weekends\, Sept. 10 – Nov. 12th \nFridays\, 6-8pm \nSaturdays\, 10am-4pm \nSundays 1-4pm \n(Parking available at 32 West Ave. or on Oakwood Ave. No entrance off Central Ave.) \n“In 1900\, about 40% of Americans lived in rural areas\, By 2010\, less than 18% of the U.S. population lived in rural areas. In just over a century\, massive economic and social changes moved millions of Americans into urban areas. Yet\, only 10% of the U.S. landmass is considered urban. \nMany Americans consider rural communities to be endangered and hanging on by a thread—suffering from brain drain\, inadequate schools\, and a barren\, overused landscape. Why should revitalizing the rural places left behind matter to those who remain\, those who left\, and those who will come in the future? Because there is much more to the story of rural America. \nCrossroads: Change in Rural America offers small towns a chance to look at their own paths to highlight the changes that affected their fortunes over the past century. The exhibition will prompt discussions about what happened when America’s rural population became a minority of the country’s population and the ripple effects that occurred. \nDespite the massive economic and demographic impacts brought on by these changes\, America’s small towns continue to creatively focus on new opportunities for growth and development. Economic innovation and a focus on the cultural facets that make small towns unique\, comfortable\, and desirable have helped many communities create their own renaissance. The future is bright for much of rural America as small towns embrace the notion that their citizens and their cultural uniqueness are important assets.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nSee a video preview of the exhibition Crossroads: Change in Rural America\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExhibition Contents:\n\n\n5 free-standing exhibition units with photographs\, text panels\, and objects\nvideo monitor\n1 free-standing touchscreen interactive computer kiosks featuring video and audio content\n1 outdoor banner\nExhibition support materials for state and local coordinators\nSupport publications include: promotional posters and postcards and docent handbook\n\n\nALL COPY AND PICS FROM THE WEBSITE: https://www.sites.si.edu/s/topic/0TO36000000aR1sGAE/crossroads-change-in-rural-america

DESCRIPTION:PRESS RELEASE: “The event will feature music from Homestead Bluegrass Band\, food trucks and local craft beer\, cornhole\, face and pumpkin painting\, a sunset bonfire\, 50/50 raffle and more. Admission to the event is free and all members of the public are welcome to attend. \nSussex County Land Trust in partnership with Sussex County Council will host a free event from 4 to 8 p.m.\, Saturday\, Oct. 22\, on Sweetbriar Road near Route 9 west of Lewes to celebrate the acquisition and protection of Hopkins Preserve\, a 51-acre property adjacent to the Lewes-to-Georgetown rail trail. The property was acquired for land preservation purposes and will eventually offer public access as an outdoor recreation area. \nSCLT board members and county officials will unveil the conceptual masterplan for the future of the property at the event and will also update the public about other recent initiatives. \n“Protecting Sussex County so that it remains special and spacious is what we’re trying to achieve with partnerships like this between the county council and the land trust\,” said Sussex County Council President Michael H. Vincent. “It takes a grassroots and wide-ranging effort\, from private enterprise and philanthropic sources to government and community leaders\, as well as everyday citizens\, all working together for the singular purpose of passing something on to future generations. This campaign embodies that spirit. We’re proud to continue our partnership with the Sussex County Land Trust to ensure parcels like the Hopkins Preserve can literally remain a part of the landscape and give visitors another place to enjoy our community’s natural beauty and wonder.” \n“The trust board and our partners at the county are so excited to introduce this project to the public and celebrate the protection of a property that could have otherwise been developed. Our board worked harmoniously with our county partners and the Hopkins family\, and this property will serve as a perpetual recreational amenity in the future\,” said Heidi Gilmore\, SCLT board chair.
