The broad-based committee\, chaired by event founder Lewes Mayor Ted Becker\, includes Lewes in Bloom co-chairs and founder\, a representative from City of Lewes Parks and Recreation Commission and the Zwaanendael Museum. This year Lewes in Bloom funded the purchase of 26\,931 tulip and 3\,950 spring bulbs that were planted in fall 2021 by members of Lewes in Bloom.\nThe timing of the tulips’ appearance is an inexact science and either milder or colder weather in advance of the event dates can increase the probability that the dates of the celebration may not exactly coincide with the tulips blooming! The event dates (April 1-17) span three weekends. \nThe locations of the plantings will be identified on the map produced in association with the celebration. More than 100 varieties will be on display. \nTiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district. The map lists more than 20 locations where the bulbs were planted. It also has a schedule of activities associated with the Tulip Celebration. \nTulip Sale: On April 15 & 16 Lewes in Bloom will be selling tulips at the Bank Street Plaza on Second Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. \nHistory in Bloom Walking Tours: The Lewes Historical Society and Lewes in Bloom are partnering to offer walking tours on Saturday\, April 2nd and Saturday\, April 9th at 10:30 a.m.\, 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  The tours will be led by a historic guide and will provide information on Lewes’ rich maritime history.  A knowledgeable guide from Lewes in Bloom will be on the tour to point out the multiple tulip varieties found around Lewes.  The tours begin at the Cannonball House’s back garden\, behind 118 Front Street. The tour cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. The monies raised by ticket sales will support the ongoing restoration of the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse. \nTours will take place from 7 to 9 p.m.\, Saturday\, June 5\, and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.\, Saturday\, Sept. 11. Participants are required to be at the dock for check-in a half-hour before departure time. Cruises leave from Anglers Fishing Center\, 213 Anglers Road\, Lewes\, where there is plenty of free parking. Passengers are invited to bring their own beverages and snacks for the outing. \nCruises travel up the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal\, through Roosevelt Inlet and into Delaware Bay to view both the Delaware Breakwater East End Light and the Harbor of Refuge Light\, which mark the entrance to Delaware Bay and the National Harbor of Refuge. Photo opportunities include not only the lighthouses at sunset\, but often pods of dolphins and other sea creatures. \nAlso this year\, the foundation will offer on-site tours of the Harbor of Refuge Light at 9 and 10:15 a.m.\, Saturday\, July 24; 8:30 and 9:45 a.m.\, Saturday\, Aug. 21; and 11 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.\, Saturday\, Sept. 25. For several years\, her popularity grew around such memorable originals as “Bring Me Some Water\,” “No Souvenirs” and “Ain’t It Heavy\,” for which she won a Grammy Award in 1992. \nEtheridge hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album\, Yes I Am (1993). The collection featured the massive hits\, “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window\,” a searing song of longing that brought Etheridge her second Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Performance. In 1995\, Etheridge issued her highest charting album\, Your Little Secret\, which was distinguished by the hit single\, “I Want to Come Over.” Her astounding success that year led to Etheridge receiving the Songwriter of the Year honor at the ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996. \nKnown for her confessional lyrics and raspy\, smoky vocals\, Etheridge has remained one of America’s favorite female singer-songwriters for more than two decades. In February 2007\, Melissa Etheridge celebrated a career milestone with a victory in the “Best Song” category at the Academy Awards for “I Need to Wake Up\,” written for the Al Gore documentary on global warming\, “An Inconvenient Truth.” As a performer and songwriter\, Etheridge has shown herself to be an artist who has never allowed “inconvenient truths” to keep her down. Earlier in her recording career\, Etheridge acknowledged her sexual orientation when it was considered less than prudent to do so. \nIn October 2004\, Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer\, a health battle that\, with her typical tenacity\, she won. Despite losing her hair from chemotherapy\, Etheridge appeared on the 2005 Grammy’s telecast to sing “Piece of My Heart” in tribute to Janis Joplin. By doing so she gave hope to many women afflicted with the disease. \nOn Oct. 7\, 2016 Melissa Etheridge released Memphis Rock & Soul\, her first album since 2014’s critically lauded “This Is M.E.” Recorded at Royal Studios in Memphis\, the album received stellar reviews from the likes of Entertainment Weekly\, Parade\, Rolling Stone\, American Songwriter and more. She followed that up with the release of “The Medicine Show” in April 2019. For “The Medicine Show\,” Melissa reunited with celebrated producer John Shanks and sounds as rousing as ever\, bringing a new level of artistry to her 15th studio recording. “The Medicine Show” deals with universal themes of renewal\, reconciliation\, reckoning\, compassion and\, most profoundly\, healing. \nIn June 2020\, Melissa launched Etheridge TV\, an independent channel built on the Maestro platform. Etheridge goes live five days a week for her fans\, each day offering something different. That same month Melissa also announced the launch of The Etheridge Foundation. Through the foundation\, the singer hopes to raise money to support healthy new research into the causes and effects of opioid addiction. She wants to partner with and support organizations that delve into new ways of understanding and treating underlying mental health issues in conjunction with drug addiction. She hopes to find ways for people to seek treatment outside of pharmaceutical norms and find new answers and relief for those suffering from the devastating effects of addiction. \nLARKIN POE\nRebecca & Megan Lovell of Larkin Poe are singer/songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist sisters creating their own brand of Roots Rock ‘n’ Roll: gritty\, soulful\, and flavored by their southern heritage.
