SUMMARY:Mid-Atlantic Symphony Announces Finalists for Elizabeth Loker International Concerto Competition
DESCRIPTION:Delmarva Peninsula- The Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is pleased to announce the three finalists selected for the prestigious Elizabeth Loker International Concerto Competition (ELICC). These young musicians\, chosen from around the world\, will perform with the MSO on Sunday\, March 23\, 2025\, at 3:00 PM at Todd Hall for the Performing Arts at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills\, MD. The ELICC is quickly becoming one of the most distinguished competitions worldwide for young classical musicians aged 12 to 25. \nThe competition drew remarkable talent from across the U.S. and internationally\, with applicants hailing from 27 states and countries including Australia\, Canada\, China\, Croatia\, Germany\, the Netherlands\, Portugal\, and Russia. The finalists will each perform a concerto of their choice with the MSO\, conducted by Music Director Michael Repper\, in front of a distinguished panel of judges. What sets the ELICC apart is the unique opportunity for finalists to perform with a full orchestra\, as opposed to the typical piano accompaniment provided in most competitions. This offers an unparalleled experience for these young musicians\, many of whom will be performing as soloists with a full orchestra for the first time. \nThe three finalists vying for top honors are: \n●     Christopher Chung\, Bassoon (New York City)\, performing Ciranda das Sete Notas by Heitor Villa-Lobos \n●     Jonah Kwek\, Piano (Singapore)\, performing Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor\, Op. 23 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky \n●     Britton-René Alyssa Collins\, Marimba (New York City)\, performing Concerto for Marimba by Sergei Golovko \nEach of these artists brings their own unique style and passion to the stage\, having built impressive resumes and garnered accolades across international music circuits. \nChristopher Chung\, a student at the Juilliard School\, has performed with top orchestras including the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and Minnesota Orchestra. He is known for his work with Sonarsix\, a woodwind quintet\, and his contributions to the Ziering-Conlon Initiative for Recovered Voices. \nJonah Kwek\, a graduate of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore and currently pursuing a Master of Music at the Peabody Institute\, is recognized for his versatility and has performed as a soloist and collaborative pianist worldwide. His recent achievements include winning the MTNA Stecher and Horowitz Two Piano Competition with his duo partner. \nBritton-René Alyssa Collins\, a percussion virtuoso and recipient of numerous awards including the prestigious Princeton University Hodder Fellowship\, has performed globally in venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Her musical mission also encompasses social change\, using percussion as a tool to celebrate Black identity. \nMSO’s Music Director Michael Repper is eager to conduct the finalists\, bringing his youthful dynamism to the concert. “I am deeply excited to work with these extraordinary young musicians\,” Repper said. “The energy and talent they bring to the stage will be a powerful reminder of the next generation of classical performers.” \nIn addition to the performances\, the MSO is proud to continue its educational mission by offering complimentary tickets to hundreds of local music students\, inspiring the next generation of musicians with this high-level competition. \nEvent Details\nDate: Sunday\, March 23\, 2025\nTime: 3:00 PM\nLocation: Todd Hall for the Performing Arts\, Chesapeake College\, Wye Mills\, MD \nThe Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra invites music enthusiasts to witness the future of classical music at this thrilling competition concert\, where rising stars will showcase their talent and passion\, leaving audiences inspired by the next generation of world-class musicians. \nABOUT THE MID-ATLANTIC SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA \nThe Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is the only professional symphony orchestra serving southern Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore with a full season of programs. SUMMARY:Author signing and talk: William Geroux "The Fifteen"
DESCRIPTION:An in-person in the library or online for a conversation with William Geroux\, author of The Fifteen: Murder\, Retribution\, and the Forgotten Story of Nazi POWs in America. Learn about the revelatory true story of the long-forgotten POW camps for German soldiers erected in hundreds of small U.S. towns during World War II\, and the secret Nazi killings that ensnared fifteen brave American POWs in a high-stakes showdown. \nDrawing on extensive research\, Geroux shines a spotlight on a story of murder and high-stakes diplomacy\, and on fifteen American lives that hung in the balance—from a fearless P-51 Mustang fighter pilot to a hot-tempered lieutenant colonel nicknamed “King Kong.” Propulsive and vividly rendered\, The Fifteen reminds us that what happens to soldiers after they exit the battlefield can be just as harrowing as what they experience on it. \nMarch 25th\, 5-6pm at the Lewes Public Library

SUMMARY:Help with Village Volunteers!!
DESCRIPTION:Share your time\, your skills\, your way.\n  \nIf our members are the Village’s heart\, our volunteers are the Village’s soul.\nThose volunteers give selflessly of their time\, their talents\, and their compassion in order to serve their neighbors and nurture a vibrant community of support for older adults in Sussex County\, Delaware. \n  \nOur volunteers are also incredibly loyal. Many are members themselves. Many have been with the Village since it began operations in 2013. And part of that loyalty is due to the fact that the Village encourages volunteers to choose the services they enjoy and their availability schedule. \nAnd volunteering has its own rewards! In a survey by the United Health Group: \n\n96% of volunteers say their efforts give them a richer sense of purpose in life.\n95% say volunteering makes their community a better place.\n94% say it improves their mood\, and 78% say it lowers their stress levels.\n\nOurs is a proactive\, data-based approach that balances supply and demand through sophisticated demographic mapping. Members can count on volunteers who are reliable neighbors. And volunteers can count on service requests that reflect their own schedules and interests. \nLearn about volunteer opportunities \nAll info and more at the website: https://villagevolunteer.org/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=492141&module_id=148131
