SUMMARY:EAST OF THE RIVER
DESCRIPTION:“East of the River offers an incredible range and depth in their music … \neclectic\, emotional\, educational\, exquisite\, and most importantly\, enjoyable!”  \n– Gary Viebranz\, Penn State Erie’s ‘Logan Series’ presenter \n \nAbout East of the River \nEast of the River was founded by internationally renowned recorder players Nina Stern and Daphna Mor. They are known for exploring haunting and virtuosic melodies from the traditional repertoires of the Balkans\, Armenia and the Middle East\, as well as gems of the Medieval European classical repertory. The music is arranged and interpreted by musicians whose musical backgrounds include Classical\, World music and Jazz. Together they create the unique blend that is East of the River. The members of the ensemble have separately recorded and performed with such artists as Yo Yo Ma\, Philip Glass\, Jordi Savall\, Sting\, Natalie Merchant\, Aerosmith\, Simon Shaheen\, Glen Velez and many others. \n \nNina Stern \nNina Stern has carved a unique and astonishingly diverse career for herself as a world-class recorder player and classical clarinetist. A native New Yorker\, Ms. Stern studied at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel\, Switzerland\, where she received a Soloist’s Degree. From Basel\, she moved to Milan\, Italy where she was offered a teaching position at the Civica Scuola di Musica. \n \nMs. Stern performs widely on recorders\, chalumeaux\, and historical clarinets. She has appeared as a soloist or principal player with orchestras such as The New York Philharmonic\, New York City Opera\, The Metropolitan Opera\, American Classical Orchestra\, Orchestra of St. Luke’s\, Philharmonia Baroque\, Trinity Baroque Orchestra\, Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra\, La Scala Theatre Orchestra\, Clarion Orchestra\, I Solisti Veneti\, Hesperion XX\, Opera Lafayette\, Handel and Haydn Society\, and Tafelmusik. \n \nHer numerous festival and concert series appearances have included performances under leading conductors such as Loren Maazel\, Kurt Masur\, Christopher Hogwood\, Trevor Pinnock\, Claudio Scimone\, Kent Tritle\, Jane Glover\, Bruno Weil\, Ton Koopman\, Andrew Parrot \, Harry Christophers and Jordi Savall. She has recorded for Erato\, Harmonia Mundi\, Sony Classics\, Newport Classics\, Wildboar\, Telarc\, MSR\, Good Child Music\, Smithsonian and AVIE labels. \n \nNina Stern’s latest projects include performances and recordings of traditional music of Eastern Europe\, Armenia\, and The Middle East as a soloist and with her ensembles Rose of the Compass and East of the River (Daphna Mor\, co-Director). In recent years\, Rose of the Compass has collaborated annually with the conductor Kent Tritle and the Choir of St. John the Divine in creating programs for the “Great Music in a Great Space” concert series at the Cathedral. East of the River’s latest album Ija Mia was released on the AVIE label in March of 2024. \n \nMs. Stern was appointed to the faculty of Juilliard’s Historical Performance program in 2012 and has served on the faculties of the Mannes College of Music where she directed the Historical Performance Program from 1989 to 1996\, the Civica Scuola di Musica (Milan\, Italy)\, Oberlin Conservatory\, and the Five Colleges in Massachusetts. \n \nNina Stern is also hailed as an innovator in teaching school-age children to be fine young musicians. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of S’Cool Sounds\, a successful hands-on music education project. The Washington Post applauded this program as a model in its “innovation in the classroom” series (11/9/03). For this important work Ms. Stern was awarded an Endicott Fellowship in 2003 and was honored by Early Music America in 2005 with the “Early Music Brings History Alive” Award and again in 2019 with the Laurette Goldberg Award for Achievement in Early Music Outreach.  \n \nNina Stern served as Director of Education for the New York Collegium from 2002-2007. She has consulted for Midori & Friends and for Carnegie Hall’s Weill Institute\, helping them to develop and expand their recorder curriculum. She is the author of two books for beginning recorder players and percussion\, “Recorders Without Borders.” Ms. Stern has shared her teaching methods with students and teachers throughout the U.S.\, in the Netherlands and Belgium\, and has worked to establish recorder programs in several schools in the informal settlement of Kibera in Nairobi\, Kenya\, at Village Health Works in Kigutu\, Burundi and at a school for Syrian refugee children in Azraq\, Jordan. \n \nIn 2023\, Nina received the American Recorder Society’s Distinguished Achievement Award.  \n \nDaphna Mor \nDaphna Mor (recorders\, voice\, ney) has performed throughout Europe and the United States as both a soloist and ensemble player. Mor’s “astonishing virtuosity” (Chicago Tribune) has been heard in solo recitals in the United States\, Croatia\, Germany and Switzerland. \n \nShe has performed as a soloist with the New York Collegium\, the New York Early Music Ensemble and Little Orchestra Society\, and as a member of the orchestra with the New York Philharmonic\, New York City Opera and Orchestra of St. Luke’s. Mor was awarded First Prize in the Settimane Musicali di Lugano Solo Competition and the Boston Conservatory Concerto Competition and has appeared in a duo with Joyce DiDonato on the singer’s promotional tour for the album In War and Peace. \n \nDevoted to new music\, Mor has recorded on John Zorn’s Tzadik label\, and has performed the world premiere of David Bruce’s Tears\, Puffes\, Jumps and Galliard with the Metropolis Ensemble. Also active in the world music community\, Mor has performed in festivals and on stages worldwide\, including New York’s Summer Stage and Munich’s Gasteig. \n \nShe can also be heard on Sting’s album If On A Winter’s Night for Deutsche Grammophon. Mor serves as the Music Director of Beineinu\, a New York initiative dedicated to the modern cultivation of Jewish culture\, and is a researcher\, performer and teacher of liturgical music of the Jewish diaspora. She leads programs for the Education Department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  \n  \nAll info & pics from website: 2024 – 2025 Concert Season | Coastal Concerts Lewes\, Delaware

SUMMARY:Cuarteto Latinoamericano
DESCRIPTION:“… one of the world’s most renowned string quartets and the  \nleading proponent of Latin American music for the genre….” \nCuarteto Latinoamericano is one of the world’s most renowned string quartets and\, for forty years\, the leading proponent of Latin American music for the genre. Founded in Mexico in 1982\, the Cuarteto has toured extensively around the world\, and premiered over a hundred works written for them. Winners of two Latin Grammy Award for Best Classical Album\, they also have been awarded with the prestigious Diapason d’Or\, have been recognized with the Mexican Music Critics Association Award\, and have received three “Most Adventurous Programming” Awards from Chamber Music America/ASCAP. \n \nCuarteto Latinoamericano’s members are three Bitrán brothers: violinists Saul and Aron and cellist Alvaro\, with violist Javier Montiel. They have recorded more than 100 CDs\, including nearly the entire Latin American repertoire for string quartet. \nFormed in Mexico in 1982\, Cuarteto Latinoamericano was\, from 1987 until 2008\, quartet-in-residence at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Under the auspices of the Sistema Nacional de Orquestas Juveniles of Venezuela\, the Cuarteto created the Latin American Academy for String Quartets\, based in Caracas\, which was active between 2008 and 2014. The Academy served as a training ground for five select young string quartets from the Sistema\, groups which went on to lead active international careers.  \n \nIn their own words … \nIndividually\, we are Saul\, Aron and Alvaro Bitran\, and Javier Montiel. Together\, we are known as the Cuarteto Latinoamericano. Our audiences have lots of questions about us. For example\, whether that big case that we carry with us is a guitarrón. \n \nNo\, it’s a cello. And we are not a mariachi band; we don’t play with ponchos or guitars\, despite what many people ask. We know that our name may be a bit misleading\, but there are reasons for it: not only do we hail from Latin America\, but mainly\, we have made an almost forty-year-long career by mostly playing concert music by composers from countries South of the Rio Bravo. This music “the music of our continent” is as varied as its culture\, its geography\, its food and history. Some of these composers undoubtedly draw from Latin America’s rich popular music tradition\, while others write music that sounds universal\, and could have been written anywhere in the world. Having said that\, it does seem that a lot of the Latin American repertoire prominently features rhythm (or so we are told). But\, in any case\, our only criterion for selecting our Latin American repertoire is its artistic quality. \n \nOf course\, like any budding string quartet\, in the distant year of 1982 in Mexico City\, we started with Mozart\, Beethoven\, Brahms\, Borodin\, Ravel\, etc. But soon thereafter we began to discover the wonderful repertoire awaiting us in our own neck of the woods and\, in parallel\, we found out that it was very much appreciated in different parts of the world. This is how this music\, which we have recorded on over 80 CDs\, has gotten us many awards\, such as two Latin Grammys\, multiple Grammy nominations\, and the coveted Diapason d’Or in France\, among others and has brought us to renowned halls such as the Teatro alla Scala in Milan\, Carnegie Hall\, the Concertgebouw and other marvelous concert venues in Israel\, China\, Japan\, New Zealand\, and practically all of Europe and the Americas. \n \nThis is how\, until this very day we continue to travel the world with our beloved scores by Villa-Lobos\, Revueltas\, Ginastera\, Piazzolla and many other great Latin American masters in our briefcases. Sometimes we wonder ourselves how it is even possible to have lasted for so many years together. We think we owe this to several factors\, not least among them good luck. A musician’s career is fragile by nature\, as it is totally dependent on the performer’s good health. When multiplied by four\, this situation turns even more delicate. Thus\, fate has been generous with us\, not to mention other very relevant issues: the love for what we do\, having incredibly supportive families\, the affection amongst us four and\, last but not least\, the sense of humor with which we approach our career and especially our travels\, which delight us with plenty of hilarious and absurd situations. \n \nEqually important for our long career has been the support we have received from many institutions which we cannot thank enough. In particular\, we are indebted to Mexico’s National Fund for Culture and Art (FONCA)\, which has supported us uninterruptedly since 2004 through its Mexico en Escena grant. We are also thrilled with our teaching activities at the multiple music schools\, universities and conservatories with which we collaborate regularly\, as well as the numerous international festivals in which we participate year after year. And\, undoubtedly\, we have been inspired by our collaborations with brilliant artists\, such as Janos Starker\, Eduardo Mata\, Rudolf Buchbinder\, Manuel Barrueco\, Itamar Golan and many others. \nAs our fortieth Anniversary approaches\, we keep traveling around the world. Our hair has become grayer and scarcer\, and our instruments seem to weigh a bit more each day. But our desire to keep performing the marvelous Latin American and mainstream string quartet repertoire\, and of course the mutual rapport among ourselves\, keep us together\, full of energy and forever thinking about our next concert. All this seems like a miracle to us\, and we feel incredibly lucky and grateful to have made an entire life out of our Cuarteto Latinoamericano. \n  \nAll info and pics from the website: 2024 – 2025 Concert Season | Coastal Concerts Lewes\, Delaware

Edward Dusinberre\, Harumi Rhodes (violins)\, Richard O’Neill (viola) and András Fejér (cello) are excited to bring to fruition several innovative projects for the 2021-2022 season. With bandoneon/accordion virtuoso Julien Labro\, the group will perform throughout the USA new works composed for them by Clarice Assad and Bryce Dessner. This season also marks the world premiere of a new quartet written for the Takács by Stephen Hough\, Les Six Rencontres. The Takács will record this extraordinary work for Hyperion Records\, in combination with quartets by Ravel and Dutilleux. \n\n\n\n\nDuring the last year\, the Takács marked the arrival of Grammy-award-winning violist\, Richard O’Neill by making two new recordings for Hyperion. Quartets by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel and Felix Mendelssohn were released in the Fall of 2021\, to be followed in May 2022 by a disc of Haydn’s opp. 42\, 77 and 103. \nThe Takács Quartet continues its role in 2021-2022 as Associate Artists at London’s Wigmore Hall\, performing four concerts there this season. In addition to many concerts in the U.K.\, the ensemble will play at prestigious European venues including the Paris Philharmonie\, Berlin Konzerthaus\, and Teatro Della Pergola\, Florence. The Takács will perform throughout North America\, including concerts in New York\, Boston\, Washington DC\, Princeton\, Ann Arbor\, Berkeley\, San Francisco\, Philadelphia\,Vancouver\, Los Angeles\, Atlanta\, Cleveland\, and Portland. \nThe Takács records for Hyperion Records. The ensemble recently won a Gramophone Classical Music Award 2021 in the Chamber category for their recording of quintets by Amy Beach and Elgar with pianist Garrick Ohlsson. The cd also won a Presto Classical Recording of the Year. Other discs for Hyperion include string quartets by Haydn\, Schubert\, Janáček\, Smetana\, Debussy and Britten\, as well as piano quintets by César Franck and Shostakovich (with Marc-André Hamelin)\, viola quintets by Brahms and Dvorák (with Lawrence Power). For their CDs on the Decca/London label\, the Quartet has won three Gramophone Awards\, a Grammy Award\, three Japanese Record Academy Awards\, Disc of the Year at the inaugural BBC Music Magazine Awards\, and Ensemble Album of the Year at the Classical Brits. Full details of all recordings can be found in the Recordings section of the Quartet’s website. \nIn 2014 the Takács became the first string quartet to be awarded the Wigmore Hall Medal. The Medal\, inaugurated in 2007\, recognizes major international artists who have a strong association with the Hall. Recipients include Andras Schiff\, Thomas Quasthoff\, Menahem Pressler and Dame Felicity Lott. In 2012\, Gramophone announced that the Takács was the first string quartet to be inducted into its Hall of Fame\, along with such legendary artists as Jascha Heifetz\, Leonard Bernstein and Dame Janet Baker. The ensemble also won the 2011 Award for Chamber Music and Song presented by the Royal Philharmonic Society in London. \nThe Takács Quartet is known for innovative programming. The ensemble performed a program inspired by Philip Roth’s novel Everyman with Meryl Streep at Princeton in 2014\, and again with her at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto in 2015. They first performed Everyman at Carnegie Hall in 2007 with Philip Seymour Hoffman. They have toured 14 cities with the poet Robert Pinsky\, collaborate regularly with the Hungarian Folk group Muzsikas\, and in 2010 they collaborated with the Colorado Shakespeare Festival and David Lawrence Morse on a drama project that explored the composition of Beethoven’s last quartets. \nBased in Boulder at the University of Colorado\, the members of the Takács Quartet are Christoffersen Faculty Fellows. The Quartet has helped to develop a string program with a special emphasis on chamber music\, where students work in a nurturing environment designed to help them develop their artistry. Through the university\, two of the quartet’s members benefit from the generous loan of instruments from the Drake Instrument Foundation. The members of the Takács are on the faculty at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara\, where they run an intensive summer string quartet seminar\, and Visiting Fellows at the Guildhall School of Music\, London. \nThe Takács Quartet was formed in 1975 at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest by Gabor Takács-Nagy\, Károly Schranz\, Gabor Ormai and András Fejér\, while all four were students. It first received international attention in 1977\, winning First Prize and the Critics’ Prize at the International String Quartet Competition in Evian\, France. The Quartet also won the Gold Medal at the 1978 Portsmouth and Bordeaux Competitions and First Prizes at the Budapest International String Quartet Competition in 1978 and the Bratislava Competition in 1981. \nAndrás Fejér \nAndrás Fejér(cello) was born in 1955 into a musical family. His father was a cellist and conductor\, and his mother was a pianist. He began playing the cello at the age of seven\, because as legend has it\, his father was unwilling to listen to a violin-upstart practicing. Since an early age\, his parents have held string quartet weekends\, which\, for the young cellist were the most memorable of occasions\, if not for the music\, then for the glorious desserts his mother used to prepare for those sessions. \nAfter attending a music high school\, Mr. Fejér was admitted to the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in 1975\, where he was a pupil of Ede Banda\, András Mihály\, Ferenc Rados and György Kurtág. That same year he founded the Takács String Quartet with three fellow classmates. Although the quartet has been his sole professional focus since then\, he does perform as a soloist occasionally as well. \nMr. Fejér is married to a literature teacher. They have three children and live in the Rocky Mountains where they enjoy year-round sunshine in beautiful Boulder\, Colorado. When he is not on tour he enjoys reading\, photography\, tennis and hiking. \nEdward Dusinberre \nAs first violinist of the Takács Quartet\, Edward Dusinberre has won a Grammy and awards from Gramophone Magazine\, the Japanese Recording Academy\, Chamber Music America and the Royal Philharmonic Society. Outside of the quartet he has made a recording of Beethoven’s violin sonatas nos. 9 (Kreutzer) and 10 on the Decca label and recently performed Costa Concordia\, a concerto composed for him by Jeffrey Nytch\, inspired by the tragic story of violinist Sándor Fehér who was drowned on the cruise ship of that name in 2012. Dusinberre is also an author. His book Beethoven for a Later Age: The Journey of a String Quartet\, takes the reader inside the life of a string quartet\, melding music history and memoir as it explores the circumstances surrounding the composition of Beethoven’s quartets and the Takács Quartet’s experiences rehearsing and performing this music. The book was published by Faber in the UK and the University of Chicago Press\, winning the Royal Philharmonic Society’s 2016 Creative Communication Award. Announcing the award the RPS Committee said: “Few have told so well of the musician’s life\, or offered such illuminating insights to players and listeners alike.” The book has recently been translated into German and a Korean edition will be released soon. Dusinberre lives in Boulder\, where he is Artist-in-Residence and a Christoffersen Fellow at the University of Colorado. In 2017 he was appointed a member of the faculty at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara and is a Visiting Fellow at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. \nHarumi Rhodes \nAcclaimed by theNew York Times as a “deeply expressive violinist\,” Harumi Rhodes has gained broad recognition as a multifaceted musician with a distinctive and sincere musical voice. Her generosity of spirit on stage is contagious\, making her one of the most sought-after violinists of her generation. Recent solo engagements include performances of Bernstein Serenade\, Beethoven Violin Concerto\, Mozart Violin Concerto No 5\, and Vivaldi Four Seasons with the Vermont Mozart Festival Orchestra. In addition to being a founding member of the Naumburg Award winning ensemble\, Trio Cavatina\, she has performed regularly with Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Musicians from Marlboro. Rhodes has served as Head of Strings and Chamber Music at Syracuse University\, Assistant Violin Faculty at the Juilliard School\, and most recently as Assistant Professor of Violin at the University of Colorado-Boulder. \nRichard O’Neill \nNewly appointed violist of the Takács Quartet\, Richard O’Neill has distinguished himself as one of the great instrumentalists of his generation. \nAn EMMY Award winner\, two time GRAMMY nominee and Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient\, he has appeared as soloist with the world’s top orchestras including the London\, Los Angeles\, Seoul Philharmonics\, the BBC\, Hiroshima\, Korean Symphonies\, the Kremerata Baltica\, Moscow\, Vienna and Wurtemburg Chamber Orchestras\, Alte Musik Koln\, and has worked with distinguished musicians and conductors including Andrew Davis\, Vladimir Jurowski\, Francois Xavier Roth and Yannick Nezet-Seguin. An Artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Principal Violist of Camerata Pacifica\, for thirteen seasons he served as Artistic Director of DITTO\, his South Korean chamber music project\, leading the ensemble on international tours to China and Japan and introducing tens of thousands to music. \nA Universal Music/Deutsche Grammophon recording artist\, he has made 10 solo albums and many other chamber music recordings\, earning multiple platinum discs. SUMMARY:Coastal Concerts presents Smetana Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Smetana Trio\, founded in 1934 by the legendary Czech pianist Josef Pálenícek\, violinist Alexandr Plocek and cellist František Smetana\, is today’s foremost Czech chamber ensemble. Currently comprised of Jitka Cechová (piano)\, Jan Talich (violin)\, and Jan Pálenícek (cello)\, the Smetana perpetuates the interpretational ideals created by its illustrious predecessors as well as other superlative 20th-century soloists active in chamber music. “There is nothing routine about the Smetana Trio’s approach to this engaging repertoire. Every aspect of their interpretation is carefully considered without losing an ounce of spontaneity. Individual lines are remarkable for their focus and beauty\, though the powerful sense of ensemble is never sacrificed to individual display.”  – BBC Music Magazine \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSmetana Trio\n\n\nSATURDAY NOVEMBER 12th @ 7:30 pm \n(Performance Insights  @ 6:30 pm) \nBethel United Methodist Church \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Concert Tickets | Program Notes\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing a triumphant\, multi-city North American tour in the 2017-2018 season\, the Smetana Trio returned to the United States in spring 2019 with programs including piano trios by Rachmaninoff\, Martinů\, Dvořák\, Novak\, and Smetana.  Highlights from this tour included performances at the University of Oregon\, Friends of Chamber Music Vancouver\, and Queen’s University in Ontario.  Overseas\, the Trio embarked on several European tours with performances throughout the Czech Republic\, Germany\, Switzerland\, Italy\, and the United Kingdom\, where the Trio was presented by London’s Wigmore Hall.
