Pat’s Experience
Pat received their Medicare Summary Notice for Part B, detailing claims processed between June and October 2025. To their shock, four claims appeared for large quantities of medical supplies they’d never ordered—specifically, 300 intermittent urinary catheters each month for four months. The claims totaled $9,000, of which Medicare paid over $5,100. Pat acted quickly upon discovering this:
- First, they contacted Medicare right away. The representative forwarded their case to the Medicare Fraud Department and advised Pat not to reach out directly to the supplier or provider.
- Second, Pat reported the incident to their Medicare Supplement insurer, who agreed to flag the case and monitor for future fraudulent claims.
Pat also switched to monthly electronic Medicare Summary Notices instead of waiting for mailed quarterly updates. This way, they could catch suspicious activity sooner.
Steps You Can Take
- Closely read your Medicare statements. Check every claim for unfamiliar providers, supplies, or services.
- Create a Medicare account at Medicare.gov/account. Subscribe to monthly summary notices online for faster updates.
- Report suspected fraud immediately. Contact Medicare directly if you notice unusual claims:
- Medicare fraud hotline: 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227)
- Or use Medicare’s fraud help page
- Notify your Medicare Supplement or other insurer when fraud occurs. This helps ensure no additional payments are processed.
- Protect your Medicare number. Only share it with trusted providers; don’t carry your Medicare card unless you need it for appointments.
Warning Signs to Watch For
- Claims for products/services you didn’t order or receive
- Unexpected calls or emails requesting your Medicare information
- Suppliers offering free equipment “if you provide your Medicare number”
If you suspect fraud, never contact the supplier or provider directly—let Medicare’s fraud investigators handle it.
