Some events are fun because they’re easy.
The Lewes Polar Bear Plunge is fun because it’s not—and that’s the point.
Every year, thousands of “Bears” show up to do something a little ridiculous for a very real reason: supporting the athletes of Special Olympics Delaware. And in 2026, the main Plunge happens Sunday, February 1, 2026 at 1:00 PM in Rehoboth Beach, with a full festival weekend leading up to it.
Two ways to Plunge
1) Plunge IN-PERSON
- Where: Rehoboth Beach
- When: Sunday, February 1, 2026
- This is the classic experience: big crowd energy, winter ocean dip, and a day you won’t forget.
2) Plunge VIRTUALLY
- Plunge from your backyard, schoolyard, or anywhere you choose.
- Perfect if you can’t make it to Rehoboth Beach but still want to be part of the mission.
The mission (why people do this)
When you get cold, you give our athletes a chance to win the gold.
This event is all about showing up—whether in person or virtually—to support athletes and the bigger purpose behind the Plunge.
Important registration details
Through Tuesday, January 27 at midnight
You have two options:
- Option A: Register with a $20 deposit, giving you the option to fundraise to reach the required $100 minimum
OR - Option B: Register with the full $100 registration fee up front
Beginning Wednesday, January 28
- Registration fee increases from $100 to $125
- Deposit option is no longer available (must register with the full $125 up front)
What it is (and why people keep coming back)
It’s a full weekend, not just a quick dip
Yes, the ocean plunge is the headline. But the weekend has built-in energy: check-in times, a 5K, sculpting demos, a chili contest, and an after-party that feels like a victory lap.
It’s fundraising with a real, local impact
Plunge DE is built so every participant is doing more than “showing up.” Registration and fundraising directly support Special Olympics Delaware athletes.
How registration and fundraising work (simple version)
Here’s what most people want to know before they commit:
- Minimum fundraising requirement: $100 per Bear
- Deposit option: Register with $20, then raise the remaining $80 by Plunge Day
- Deposit deadline: Tuesday, January 27 (by midnight)
- Late registration cost change: Starting Wednesday, January 28, registration increases to $125 and the deposit option ends
Check-in tips (this makes Plunge Day easier)
Early check-in is strongly recommended, and you can even check in for other Bears.
Early check-in options include:
- Wednesday, January 28 (9:00 AM–6:00 PM): Special Olympics Delaware office in Newark
- Friday, January 30 (4:00–7:00 PM): Rehoboth Beach Convention Center
- Additional weekend check-in windows also exist (including 5K-only and Plunge-only time blocks)
What to bring (so you don’t hate yourself afterward)
- A thick towel and a warm change of clothes
- Slip-on shoes (sand + cold fingers is a rough combo)
- A bag for wet gear
- Something warm for right after: blanket, robe, oversized hoodie
- If you’re cheering: bring layers and plan to be outside longer than you think
Not plunging? You can still be part of it
- Do the 5K instead of the ocean dip
- Donate or support a friend/team fundraiser
- Volunteer (opportunities exist leading up to the weekend and during Plunge Weekend in Rehoboth)
