With 2,500 farm families in Delaware, you know it’s got to be fresh when you shop at our local farmers markets. From spring through fall, you’ll be confident your produce and products are going to be delicious. And local!
Visiting these lively markets are a great way to support and celebrate our independent farms. Most are held weekly and often feature other great, local vendors, but each has a unique personality. Grab your basket, and go on a local tour!
The busiest, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market, is a Saturday morning go-to for a sizeable and varied selection. With an army of friendly volunteers, and over 30 vendors, this popular market has an exciting atmosphere to draw you in. Bring extra (environmentally friendly) bags for all those extra goodies you’ll grab! (The market’s website shows their passion to connect you to local dairy and agriculture, so be sure to visit after your Saturday outing.)
At nearby Nassau Valley Farmers Market, summer Sunday afternoons have a special draw. Their vineyard features a scenic venue reminiscent of Sonoma Valley, right here in Delaware! Vendors offer produce and local pork products, natural remedies, and even a blade sharpening service. Soak in live music, browse the stalls, or wander into their wine store to enjoy local selections.
Closer to the beach, foodies can peruse the Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market. Tuesdays you’ll find local poultry, pickled products, homemade dog biscuits, crab cakes and more, May through October, at this growing market in a parklike setting. Our tip, take your time deciding on those pastries from Old World Breads, and browse the stalls with a warm snack in hand.
Just a few miles south, community-led Bethany Beach Farmers Market hosts its local farmers on Saturday mornings. Pick up gorgeous cut flowers and lavender products from Lavender Fields, perfect to bring the outdoors into your home. Or try fragrant local honey from Honey Bee Apiary. Plan dinner with specialty mushrooms from Davidson Mushrooms and fragrant herbs from Herbs, Spice and Everything Nice. Don’t forget fresh peaches and blueberries from Magee Farms.
Another favorite is Riverwalk Farmers Market in historic downtown Milford. Located on the scenic Mispillion Riverwalk, this market features plenty of tempting food, including locally produced cheeses and pairings from The Cheese Board, or mini desserts from Bites of Delight. There are also local artisans, selling sea glass jewelry and more. Live music keeps the crowd entertained.
