It starts the moment you arrive.
If you can, get there early and make the most of the terminals—dining, shops, and waterfront views are part of the experience. You can also stop by Grain on the Rocks in Lewes for a pre-departure meal or a post-sail cocktail. Once onboard, grab a snack, enjoy the sea breeze from the decks, and keep your phone ready—dolphins are often spotted along the route. Taking Your Vehicle on the Ferry: What You Need to Know
Vehicles, Bikes, and Motorcycles Welcome
The Cape May–Lewes Ferry can accommodate up to 100 standard vehicles per trip, including walk-on bicycles, motorcycles, SUVs, RVs, tour buses, and even tractor trailers carrying interstate cargo.
Driving to the Ferry: What to Expect
Arrival
When you arrive at either terminal, pull up to the toll booth or present your reservation confirmation. The toll operator will issue your boarding tickets. If you do not have a reservation, booking in advance is highly recommended to secure your spot.
Staging
After paying the toll, follow the signs to a numbered lane in the staging lot. A ferry security officer will scan your ticket and inspect your vehicle. You can then enjoy the terminal’s amenities or wait with your vehicle.
Boarding
Approximately 20 minutes before departure, announcements will be made asking customers to return to their vehicles. Crew members will guide you onto the Ferry, where you’ll need to:
- Park your vehicle
- Turn off the engine
- If applicable, turn off your vehicle alarm
Once you’re parked, you’re free to head upstairs and relax. Upper decks feature food, drinks, TVs, and comfortable seating. All vehicles board via ramps and are parked on the Ferry’s lower deck.
For Vehicles With Special Needs or Requirements
Low-Clearance Vehicles
If you are towing something with low ground clearance, call 1-800-643-3779 or check a tide chart before booking. Low tide could pose an issue when loading your low-clearance vehicle onto the Ferry.
Recommended timing: Schedule your trip two hours before or after high tide to ensure smooth loading.
Wide Vehicles
If you’re traveling with a larger vehicle, accurately measure its width at the wheelbase. Wider vehicles may have difficulty clearing the Ferry’s boarding ramp.
Vehicle Fares & Seasonal Pricing Basics
A few key pricing rules make everything clearer:
- Fares are determined by total vehicle length and vary by season.
- Drivers and passengers are ticketed separately.
- Exception: Bicyclists pay the standard passenger fare, while the bike is transported for free.
- Discounts are available for seniors (62+), military personnel, and AAA members.
- Frequent Traveler Discounts are available through 6-Trip or 12-Trip Frequent Traveler Books, purchasable online or by calling 1-800-643-3779.
FAQ
How early should I arrive before my departure?
Arrive at least 45 minutes before departure to allow time for check-in, boarding, and vehicle screening. Foot passengers should arrive 30 minutes prior. During peak summer months and holidays, allow extra time for lines and traffic around the terminals.
What should I wear on the ferry?
Dress for comfort. Seasonal, weather-appropriate clothing and rubber-soled or boat shoes are recommended for safe footing on deck. Avoid high heels, leather soles, and backless shoes such as flip-flops—decks can get slippery when wet.
Can I bring my own food or drinks aboard?
Outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are welcome. Alcoholic beverages must be purchased and consumed onboard in designated areas. Coolers must remain closed during travel and may be inspected for security compliance.
What items should I avoid bringing?
Weapons, fireworks, illegal substances, and hazardous materials are prohibited. If transporting firearms through New Jersey, review state regulations before traveling.
Traveling With Pets & Animals
Pets of all sizes and shapes are welcome on the Cape May–Lewes Ferry.
Can I bring my pet on the ferry?
Yes. Pets are welcome on all exterior decks but are not permitted inside passenger cabins where food is served or prepared. Pets must be leashed, kept off furniture, and under control at all times. Owners are responsible for cleanup.
Are pets allowed on shuttles?
For safety and comfort, pets are not permitted on shuttle buses.
Do you allow service animals?
Absolutely. Service animals are always welcome in all areas of the terminals and vessels in accordance with ADA guidelines.
Travel for Families With Children FAQ
Children and families love the Ferry—and there are a few rules worth knowing before you go.
Can children travel alone?
For safety reasons, children 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult or a traveler aged 14 or older using an adult ticket. Solo travelers aged 14 and up must carry a valid photo ID.
Are there family amenities on board?
Yes. Both vessels and terminals include family restrooms, stroller-friendly decks, and indoor/outdoor seating. The terminals also feature grassy picnic areas and playgrounds—perfect for little travelers.
