Cinema Art Theater – “When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit”

May 27, 2021 @ 6:00 pm

Click to view Trailer: “When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit,” a compelling drama about a German family that flees their country.

From Academy Award® winning director Caroline Link (“Nowhere in Africa”) comes an adaptation of acclaimed British author Judith Kerr’s classic novel of the same name based on her childhood memories. The story, about a Jewish family’s escape from 1933 Berlin to Europe, tackles prejudice, exile, displacement and adaptation. Anna is only nine years old when her life changes. To escape the Nazis, her father Arthur Kemper, a well-known Jewish journalist, secretly flees to Zurich. Anna, her twelve-year-old brother Max and her mother Dorothea, followed him shortly thereafter. Anna has to leave everything behind, including her beloved pink rabbit, and face a new life full of challenges and privations abroad. She begins to understand life will never be the same as she and her family navigate unfamiliar lands and cope with the challenges of being refugees. [2020, Germany, 119 min, Rated: NR, In German with English subtitles].

Sherin Nicole of “AWFJ Women on Film” pens, “’Pink Rabbit’ is gently moving, it does not hide from the Holocaust but it does remind us hope persists… [it is] as wistful as memory, it’s in the warm muted color palette, the andante pacing, and the characters who are near and still just out of reach.”
