Passing at Cinema Art Theater
November 9, 2021
Starts Friday, November 5
Passing is a poignant drama that follows the unexpected reunion of two high school friends who have chosen to follow two very different paths in their adult lives.
From first-time director Rebecca Hall comes this beautifully realized black-and-white film adaptation of American author Nella Larsen’s 1929 novel. Set in New York City during the Roaring ’20s, Passing follows Irene (Tessa Thompson, Westworld) and Clare (Ruth Negga, Loving), two mixed-race childhood friends who reunite in middle class adulthood and become increasingly involved in each other’s lives and insecurities. While Irene identifies as African-American and is married to a black Harlem doctor (Andre Holland, Moonlight), Clare “passes” as white and has married a prejudiced, wealthy white man (Alexander Skarsgard, True Blood). Their renewed acquaintance ignites a mutual obsession that threatens both of their carefully constructed realities. Passing debuted at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. [2021, UK/US, 98 min, Rated: PG-13]
Peter Travers of ABC News pens, “Starring Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga in two of the year’s best performances, this mesmerizing film about race, class, and gender identity in the 1920s speaks urgently to right now and marks a brilliant directing debut for Rebecca Hall.” Christy Lemire of Film Week says, “A beautiful film. It’s achingly sad, delicate, and gorgeous.”
