Here is a fun fact – Mead is the oldest form of alcohol in the world. Estimates of its origin are literally all over the map. Archaeological discoveries of ancient pottery from Asia and Europe provide evidence that mead was a “beverage of enjoyment” for 8,000 to 9,000 years with potential origins reaching as far back as 20,000 B.C. Others cite the earliest discovery of mead in Northern China in 6500 BC.
Mead consists of a simple formula – honey, water, and yeast. According to an old folklore passed down through generations, people living in the African bush noticed bears acting funny (“buzzed!”) after drinking from a puddle where a beehive had fallen. Intrigued by this observation, they decided to take a sip themselves, leading to the fortuitous discovery of mead.
While Game of Thrones may have been credited for Mead’s public “reawakening,” the beverage is far from a new trend, and the Brimming Horn Meadry on Route 9 in Milton (right on the Lewes-Georgetown bike/walk path) not only offers locals and tourists an opportunity to try the “Nectar of the Gods” but also a chance to – as Cher would say – Turn Back Time. The Viking theme permeates throughout!
Brimming Horn Meadery offers a unique alternative to the rather typical bar/music venue in the Rehoboth/Lewes area. Tastings are available and there is music, but the atmosphere and the flavors of the beverages are quite different (not to mention the decor!). The tasting room is adorned with a mural of the God Oden and other classic Viking artifacts.
Jon Talkington and Robert Walker (aka JR) are the founders and current owners of Brimming Horn. Both worked at the Doghead Fish Brewery before fulfilling their dream.
“We started Brimming Horn to pursue our passion for mead and create unique, high-quality meads that showcase the versatility of this ancient beverage,” said Talkington. “We also wanted to bring something different to Sussex County.”
During his 15 years at Dogfish, Talkington worked as a brewer and cellarman, gaining hands-on experience in fermentation, brewing, and quality control. Walker spent 10 years in packaging and warehouse operations, developing expertise in logistics, distribution, and inventory management. The duo felt that this combined experience provided a solid foundation for launching and growing the Brimming Horn. They blended that experience with a shared passion for Viking culture.
“Our Viking-inspired approach is more than just a theme – it’s a way of life,” says Talkington. “We’re deeply rooted in the rich history and cultural significance of mead in Norse mythology and Viking traditions. By embracing this heritage, we feel we are honoring our ancestors and the bold, adventurous spirit that defined them.”
Brimming Horn’s many awards winning meads reflect his confident attitude. “We select only the finest ingredients and experiment with innovative flavor combinations, blending tradition with modern twists,” Talkington added.
The company makes 90 percent of its mead at its new production facility in Seaford, and about 10 percent in Milton. In the past year, production has tripled due to the larger space in Seaford.
So add this great location to your list of spots to explore, and maybe you’ll find a favorite haunt!
