When the roads are empty and the sky is beginning to brighten, the best way to start your morning is by watching the sunrise at one of Delaware’s beaches. Residents in Rehoboth Beach and Lewes are fortunate to live near numerous sunrise locations that are only a short drive away.
Start your morning by taking a drive down to Rehoboth Beach to catch the sunrise while walking on the beach or take a stroll down the boardwalk as the warm rays of the sun engulf the sky. A great way to get your steps in or to check out the restaurants and shops on the boardwalk is to walk from the north end of the boardwalk to the south end of the boardwalk. It won’t even feel like you’ve walked a mile as you watch the ocean catch the rays of sunshine in the distance.
Another great location in Rehoboth is Gordon’s Pond, a serene and scenic beach that is a part of the Cape Henlopen State Park. It’s one of the few beaches in Rehoboth that allows pets during the peak season, so I love bringing my dog here to run around the quiet and empty beach as the sky begins to shine above. There’s even a trail connecting Gordon’s Pond to downtown Rehoboth if you wanted to continue your early morning by stopping by one of Rehoboth’s trendy and quaint breakfast spots.
If you’re closer to downtown Lewes, the Cape Henlopen State Park has many sunrise locations that will leave you wanting more. The Point Overlook in the state park is a great spot to watch the sunrise as you walk along the beach looking for beach glass and listen to the waves crash on the shore. You might even see a few dolphins in the distance.
Make sure you also stop by the Naval Jetty in the state park to see the sun peak over the horizon and cast the beach in a warm morning glow. I’ve had many fond memories of walking down the tree-lined path to the beach as the sun began to rise in the distance and a gorgeous blend of yellow and orange bloomed in the sky. If you’ve forgotten a beach towel to sit on, that’s no problem at all. The rocks at the Naval Jetty make the perfect spot to sit and watch a breathtaking sunrise.
Another location that’s closer to downtown Lewes is Lewes Beach. Start your day with a walk along the shore as the sunlight glistens over the bay. When the sun has risen and you’re ready for your morning coffee, head over to Surf Bagel for a cup of Swell Joe blueberry coffee and a toasted New York-style bagel. No matter which sunrise location you go to, you’ll love living here year-round as you enjoy sunrises during every season.
