To Your Health: Consider Volunteering for a Local Organization

Several studies, including from esteemed research institutions such as Harvard Medical School and The Mayo Clinic confirm that volunteering at age 60+ is beneficial to both physical and mental health. Even as little as 100 hours a year can make a positive impact, according to their studies.

As The Mayo Clinic explains, “Volunteering keeps you moving and thinking at the same time.” It can lower blood pressure, tackle social isolation and enhance your mental health through socializing and forming new relationships.

Ask most local charities that rely on volunteers to operate, chances are, their biggest pool of volunteers consists of seniors. It can be especially beneficial to new retirees who suddenly find themselves with more time to themselves.

Fortunately, Delaware has an Office of Volunteerism, and a comprehensive program for seniors, Volunteer 50+. Working with several local nonprofits, Delaware 50+ is basically a database that can match volunteers over the age of 50 with an organization that suits their interest.

in Delaware also operates Delaware 211, which according to its website is “a free, confidential service that connects people in the state with health and human service organizations that offer support to individuals and families in need.” Delaware 211 has a section on its website that links such organizations actively seeking volunteers.

The  Volunteer Opportunities page provides a link to United Way Delaware, another resource for finding an organization that is a good match for your particular interest. Their list is limited to United Way member organizations, but given the number of charities they help fund, there are plenty of ideas to explore. Another bonus of their list is that it is broken down by county, so you can find a charity in Sussex County.

Meanwhile, we are highlighting a sample of local organizations always in need of volunteers, everything from drivers to fundraising and event help.

Cape Henlopen Food Basket is a volunteer-led organization that provides free canned goods and frozen meals to families in need. Three days per week (M, W, F), distributions take place at Cape Henlopen High School.

Village Volunteers has the mission of “helping older adults age in place.” Volunteers provide companionship, wellness checks, transportation to appointments, grocery shopping and many more services. They serve seniors in Rehoboth Beach, Lewes, Milton and Dewey Beach.

For those who enjoy spending time with and mentoring children, AmericorpsSeniors is currently seeking “foster grandparents,” who are matched and spend time regularly with a child with special needs. The amount of time required varies; volunteers primarily provide companionship, wisdom and some academic coaching if needed.

Habitat for Humanity Sussex is a well-known organization providing housing built by volunteers. No previous experience with carpentry is necessary, as there are plenty of other volunteer opportunities, such as working in the ReStore thrift store on Route 9.

Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park is an all-volunteer nonprofit dedicated to the preservation and promotion of our popular beach park. The volunteers host several beach and trail cleanups, run the Bike Barn, and advocate for the park’s environment. Membership of $20 (individual) or $30 (family) helps to support the group’s efforts. Consider becoming a member if you are unable to volunteer.

GroupRaise is a national network consisting of restaurants that support nonprofits by donating a percentage of their sales back to them on a particular day. For example, Matt’s Fish Camp will donate 15% of its sales on a prearranged day. The GroupRaise link provided here is specific to our area of Southern Delaware. If you are already involved with a nonprofit, it may be beneficial to recommend GroupRaise for a fundraiser.

Similarly, SoDel Concepts, a group of several favorite local restaurants has a very generous, charitable arm, “SoDel Cares” foundation. They offer dates where a certain percentage of their sales is donated to a charity. They also donate gift cards and in kind donations to organizations they feel contribute significantly to our community.

There are, of course, many more organizations yet to be mentioned, but as you can see, they are all unique. If you have any suggestions of one to feature in Delaware Retiree, submit your suggestions in the comments section.

In closing, this inspiring quote says a lot:

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”  – Ghandi
