Delaware by Day: Coverdale Farm Preserve, Greenville

For our series on discovering day trips and family outings within Delaware, we feature Delaware Nature Society’s Coverdale Farm Preserve, a working farm that promotes and educates visitors about the concept of regenerative agriculture, conducts plenty of family events such as birthday parties, guided tours and even kite flying! 

Why not take the kids on an autumn hayride, or attend the preserve’s semi-annual native plant sale, which emphasizes the importance of attracting pollinators – such as bees and butterflies whose numbers have been diminishing in recent years. They could use our help these days, which beautifying gardens and Delaware backyards. 

One of most popular attractions that is sure to delight from May through Thanksgiving is the Market at Coverdale, utopia destination for foodies and people looking for unique locally-sourced gifts and the freshest products. Local honey, poultry, eggs, mounds of seasonal produce are featured, but there are also cookbooks, flowers and spices! 

If you are looking for a variety of weekend activities, Coverdale features both drop-in and reserved classes. Paint a pumpkin! Bring a picnic following a walk on their new pasture trail. Their list goes on! 

Also mirroring the Delaware Nature Society’s mission for sustainable farming and organic practices are their annual Turkey and Christmas tree sales – so order before they run out of either! 

As its website explains in its mission statement, Delaware Nature Society manages other preserves and wildlife habitats throughout the state. Although Coverdale Farm Preserve is a little more than an hour drive north of SoDel, it’s a destination worth exploring. 

It’s other properties include Abbott’s Mill Pond and Nature CenterAshland Nature Center located in Hockessin, and DuPont Environmental Education Center of Wilmington (a more urban setting that contrasts Coverdale, but has a different kind of mission as a wildlife and waterfowl sanctuary. 

Support the nature society’s mission to preserve and protect our entire state’s incredibly diverse geography – and make it a Delaware by Day adventure.
